|
|
Hi guys
I recently bought a pair of these headlight glasses for my 1952, but I am not 100% sure they are correct for that year
It has the VW logo on top but the design of the glass differs from similar headlight I have seen
can anyone tell me what year are they?
thanks!!! _________________ 50 11A

We need a close-up shot of the bottom of the lens, plus any markings cast into the backside of the lip... _________________ Thanks,

thanks. good news then
I am a little puzzled as other glasses I have seen have a sort of egg-shape mark right in the middle of the glass, while this one does not have it
I mean this

The lenses with the "oval" in the center was used by both Hella & Bosch. I've seen variations that date as early as 1946, and continued well into the early 60s.
This is the type I have on my '47-
When I purchased my '47, the car came with several sets of headlights, including the style you just purchased as seen in this pic (far Right)

Hello,
this is a special lens which was especially made by HELLA only for the French market. Note the French text on the lens "AGREE...." meaning accepted by French road authorities. The pressing is a bit different from all other HELLA symmetrical lenses we know.
Those are quite rare and hard to find.
I would agree that this lens is period correct for split 52-53 beetles.

this is actually very interesting info to know
I can imagine it being rare as I guess not too many splits were sold in France in 52/53
many thanks originalo! _________________ 50 11A

Since the part number (1-63658) is cast into the face of the lens, this lens was actually manufactured no earlier than about 1959. However, it was cast using the same mould used in 1952-53; so ignoring that one detail, it is correct for French market cars going back to the early 1950s. _________________ Thanks,

Ok so I basically have 3 options:
1. sell my spanish split and buy a french split
2. sell the french glasses and buy spain-correct ones
3. not tell my VW-friends here and use the french glasses on my spanish split
I think I go for option 3
thanks for the answer. it is great to learn new things every day
