I have recently picked this 1970 with a 1800cc dp for a daily driver. I am new to the bug world, and looking to build my new vw! I'm looking for tips, and things I should look for as far as bugs go! Thanks for any help!

Good year... just like mine!

Lose those big lights! They'll eventually crush the front fenders... they weren't designed to support that much weight. Smile

I hope those stripes are vinyl Shocked ... a heat gun will fix 'em, if they are.

Nice
That rack cuts into your gass mileage not to mention the noise factor.
Tune drive and enjoy.

I have noticed that, not to mention the 1800 in it. And I think it's running a bit rich right now... My MPG is retarded.

I would have to say that the 70' out of all the beetle years is the best horsepower / weight ration before nhsta made all those safety regulations and the gas crisis.... The cars got heavier and the horsepower went down!

70' was an odd year though.. As the front seat design changed the 70' style was perticular for that year only along with the carb....

I have owned my bug for 12 years, recently I have been trying to sell it on craigslist... I keep putting it up and taking it down.. I get frustrated with interested people and their ignorance....

Should I keep it or sell it...? My first car was a 73' super I always regretted selling it.. Partially the reason I have held onto my 70' for so long... Thanks for letting me ramble guys...

-cheers

I saw this one for sale on Portland's Craigslist. They had it listed quite awhile, IIRC. Congrats!

I just bought a '69 while on vacation in SoCal. I'm going to drive it up to Portland in December.

I also have a '70 Bug... LOVE IT! My favorite of all the ACVWs I have ever owned. Drives well, it's very solid. VERY dependable!

Well that sucks... Shall I go to the homedepot and buy some lumber? I think I can haul it on the rack... I'm more than happy to give you a hand on that bridge(;

No way man, this thing is sweet! Cool And for the price I got it for, was out standing

So my parents are threatening kicking me out of the garage, because the car stinks so bad of gas. What could be my problem and how could I solve the problem before I get my bug booted? I noticed the trunk has a slight gas smell to it as well. Thanks!

My '70 some time ago...14 years by now...the fuel hose from the tank up to the hatch in the body was dried up and cracked all to heck. I replaced that huge 2" or so hose and it stopped my gas smell.

Gas smell not to be confused with ACVW musk haha

I have a 70 as well, mine does the same thing. My old gas tank (the one that came with the car) had a slight bit of gas seepage between the seams on the rear side of the tank. Ive since replaced mine with one from a 69...but I still get that smell sometimes though, I also replaced all my hoses etc.

Planning on either replacing my tank with a new WW one, or sealing this one with the por 15 tank coating stuff.

Freaks my wife out as well, "You're gonna blow up the garage!" she says. If it's bad, I leave the door open.

My '70 is totally fume free. I used O rings under the screws holding the sending unit to the tank and also replaced the two hose sections at the filler neck. You can make it fume free even at fill up if you work at it.

Thanks! I'm working on this!

So, two problems... From Idle to giving it gas, There is a high pitch screeching noise coming from the motor, which I'm assuming to be the belt?

Also, all day it was running fine, but tonight when it was cold, it was idling at a lower RPM without flux...

any Ideas? Thanks!

Yeah, could be your belt is too loose - squeeze it in the middle and if you get much play, it probalby needs tightened. To tighten, remove shims from the center of the alternator pulley and put them in front of the pulley behind the nut.

It could also be a bad alternator bearing, or a bent fan that is rubbing something.

Maybe the fan rubbing inside the housing? Everything tight in there? I had a similar sound, the bracket holding the generator to the stand had slipped off.

Well, I'll be soon be starting on this build.
This is a good example of what I'm going for.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1460961
The plan for her is to convert the bumpers, tail lights, turn signals to '67 and to lower it like the one in the link. Redo all the interior to a stock '70 beige, put the correct tin, stock exhaust with zoom tube, dual webbers, and the original vacuum dizzy. All new rubbers all away around, all new electrical, gauges, and redo on this stereo system. Also need to replace the floor pans and the panel behind the rear seat. THEN I think I'll be happy with it. The owner who owned this before me did a lot of cheesy, hokey things to this car... So I have some work to do!
Here are a few more pictures.
