The first run on the dyno was 44hp, after cahnging the venturies it was 46hp. And then we gawe it a litttle more timing.
But I´m happy never thought I would get over 50hp with it. |
At what rpm did you het that horsepower? |
=51hp@4100rpm
Sorry, I had to watch the movie before I did that last post! |

Well this was what happend this summer, after almost 30.000km with the Express motor the crank gave up.
The most crazy thing was that I actually was able to limp it the last 15km home with the broken crank.
The motor is now torn down and new plans have been made.
This time I´m putting in a 72mm stroker crank, this should make it a 1341cc, kind of exited to see how this will work out.

How many is that now Peter?...I seem to remember you broke another one before. |
You have a good memory John
It´s true I also broke one back when I was running my Judson.
Apparently I rev my motors to high, I just can´t control myself _________________ http://vw-bluehats.blogspot.com/ |

They can also brake in the other end
This is the one that broke when I was running my Judson motor.

Thats due to no counterweights and no weight on the nose of the crank.
They flex in the middle and thusly break in that same spot at either end. More likely to be the flywheel end because of the flywheel weighing more and contributing more to the flex.
Add counterweights and heavier pulley or harmonic damper.
Problems will cease. _________________ Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.

72mm is a very popular stroke, out of the three I had made up from Porsche cranks I only have one left. _________________ 30 years experience in the sales of new and used auto parts!

Hi Peter,
You've run both a Judson and an Express engine on the same car. Can you pick which of the two gave you better low and top end performance? Which did you enjoy more? Which (if either) was a pain to set-up and maintain?
Thanks

Hi Trevor
I like the Express motor the most. Not near the same problems as I had with the Judson.
And I can push it much more without it getting to hot.
Only thing that I miss is the torque at low rpm´s that the Judson had. _________________ http://vw-bluehats.blogspot.com/ |

Finnally I made some progress on the motor.
The short block is now assembled, and now some machine work is needed before I can get any further.

I had 8500 trouble free kilometers with the new set up last summer.
The extra ccm made some nice low end torque, and the hp raised to 55 on the dyno.
This winter I made a new "Abarth" for it and now it's ready for some more driving

I use a 72mm DPR crank, it's really good!
The kit is Autotechnik Express made in Hannover. _________________ http://vw-bluehats.blogspot.com/ |

You could use an early Porsche cam. (103 if my memory is correct)
Period correct and very compatible with the rest of the engine.
Id would probably move the power band a little higher in the revs. But if you are still getting good torque value around 3000 RPM, it is worth a try. |

Hello malsteph: Have you good info on early Porsche cams? I have bee trying to find out what different cams the pre-A had, but haven't really succeeded. |

I use a mr okrasa cam and have no plans changing it, since it runs so good as it does. Might look for other cams if I some day need to take it apart again. _________________ http://vw-bluehats.blogspot.com/ |
