Been playing a game while watching old episodes of "The Rockford Files" on Netflix;
"Count the number of air-cooled VWs".
Besides a lot of early 1970's VWs in just about every episode on the street, there's also an episode in which there's a car chase that Rockford drives a VW bug through a construction site to get away from his pursuers.
This episode, "The Paper Palace" form Jan. 20th, 1978, however, caught my attention today.
At the end of the show, Rita Moreno's character attempts to give (as a gift) this VW Kit Car to Rockford. He doesn't accept it.
Anyone who what happened to this car, or might it be somewhere on a back lot at Universal since 1978?
Many other kit's out there like this in the early 1970's?

That is an Excalibur |
Ah! That explains a lot. Thanks. Also did some searches after you posted... found the following quote on a site about the Excaliber.
"This biggest problem with the Series II-III Excalibur to me is the use of its tail lights. VW bug. I would say that this was inventor Brooks Stevens’ single biggest mistake in building the car. It has been said that they were forced to use these lights by DOT but if he would have strapped two Eveready flash lights to the back of the car using duct tape to mount them, the car would probably have more of a following and respect today. Any light on earth would have been better for such a well built expensive car. VW Bug… Come on…. In 1979 every 6th car on the road had this tail light and no one wanted it on their 30K+ Excalibur! Because of this tail light, for years I was certain the Excalibur to be some sort of VW kit type car. "

Towards the end, Excaliburs were just rebodied production cars. I am sure some were Cadillacs underneath. They weren't kit cars so this is a bit off topic. |
