Does anyone know what happened to this WW?http://www.sunsetclassics.com/1973-vw-camper-bus/
No stripe also... |
Sullivan callled or contacted Sunset and was able to get the VIN, and production date out of their sales records, but not the full M-plate. Don't know who bought it. it actually has the earliest serial # known of all the WW. The info has been updated back on page 13. What state is it in? Minnesota? _________________ '71 Westy w/ a 1776 singleport, 34P3 & 205Q. Points.

Ok this will be my last jab at the 1974 Worlds fair Expo in Spokane. A little back ground on me and Worlds Fairs. When I was 11 my mom took me to the 82 Expo in Tennesse. It had a huge impact with sights and sounds that I carry with me today. Ill never forget the ginormus Rubics Cube! Ever since then there has been a soft spot in my heart for Expos, knowing them, seeing the history of them - past and what is left behind from the major civic buildings they made. Seattle has one of the most famous ones here with the Space needle being the symbol of the city and the focal point of the 1962 Worlds Fair. So please belive me when I say I wish the WW was a part of the 74 Expo - I realy do.
Worlds Fairs are not just a willy nilly affair. They took major pre-planning just like the Olymics do. Large chunks of sprawling metropolitan areas are gobbled up to re develope and shape into a new facility costing millions of dollars. Some people benifit greatly while others are pushed out to make way for "what is best" for the city. Its a HUGE undertaking in construction, media, jobs, marketing, fees, planning.......
Because the impact that a Worlds Fair has, its no surprise to me that a VW bus made around the same time, wearing simular colors would be coined by some clever person back in 74 as the Worlds Fair bus. To have some one like George (Tram) wax nostalgicly about it being called that - being a PNWesterner at the time would make sence. I bet allot of people that were exposed to the fair called it that. Especially in a time when the 74 Expos message was "clean, green, re-use, take care of mother earth". So why wouldnt a symbol of peace love and joy, living in harmony not be coined in with the same message the Expo was preaching? Well it may explain why the bus was chose instead of a 73 Chrysler with apple green metalic and light blue highlighted interior
Which brings me to another point. Do you know what colors were popular in 73? Look below. Oh there is lots more examples of colors from that time frame, these are just a few. Popular colors and asociation Sounds like a Psych class to me. If the bus was an Expo bus why wasnt it painted the Apple Green, have the blue stripe and have a white upper? Blue, Green and White are the primary Expo colors? And where does the black fit in? From the many videos Ive seen of the Expo, a white bus with a green bottom, blue stripe and a beige seat color would of nailed it. Not what we see in the WW combo? My 74 hard top westfalia has a better relation to Expo coloring than the WW.
In the end I think that "IF" Riviera Motors or VW or who ever wanted to let us know of an official 1974 Expo associated bus, we would have known - For Sure. The Expo was a way bigger deal than a couple of funny colored buses being sold at the time so any attraction to them via the Expo would of been a tremendous deal to be a part of. And its because of the Expos impact that I think the bus was coined affectionatly a "Fair Bus". I would like to be wrong, because if I am I would be owning one or two right now because of my personal affection with World Expos. So please prove me wrong.
Personal impcat of what the Expo meant to one person:

Okay had a chance to look around. Samba Dealer/Importer pages show the Pennsylvania area wholesaler/importer in 1967 as Volkswagen Atlantic, Inc., in King of Prussia, PA.
So my guess is the destination code "UK" on Wild Bill's Wild Westerner means "USA, King of Prussia". So now it's beginning to look like we've got separate New York and Pensylvannia importers on the East coast, as well as separate Portland and Los Angeles importers on the west coast.
And four importers really starts to put a damper on the theory that a single regional importer put in a custom order...
Notch, you faker. I can tell you made that "Camp at Expo 74 in you new VW campmobile" ad yourself. You should take it down before the internet thinks it is real... _________________ '71 Westy w/ a 1776 singleport, 34P3 & 205Q. Points.

By the way, I was 4 during the Spokane Expo, and you better believe I remember it. I got hella lost! I was prone to wondering off in those days. Come to think of it, I still get distracted by shiny things to this very day. |

Jason- I did what you're saying about Wold's Fairs and Expos... I got to see the '64 World's Fair in NYC as a little kid. We even got special license plates- I have them hanging in my shop still:
Still have one of these tucked away somewhere, too:

I was there, too. I was 11, and my dad and I rode there on a '79 Honda CX500 Custom pulling a trailer. We lived in central MN then. I have vivid memories of the colors of so many things. I specifically remember the bus from the Philippines that was all decorated to fend off evil spirits.
I think the fact that there were obviously WW buses sent to several other parts of the country means there was no Expo '74 connection. Just a coincidence. _________________ nothing |
