That's not a WW, it's a sage green stationwagon with a sticker, the interior paint color is white, not green. |
It's a '76, which rules out a WW before we even start, anyways.

Tim van Viersen from the Netherlands has sent an email with pictures and serial numbers of several WW s. Currently I'm trying to sort them out and will post them on page 13. However, Tim stated he did a query on the 73 using the code 736 which he states usually is associated with the Wild Westerners and the results with many serial numbers not shown on our list of WWs ? As soon as I can i will throw this info out there for u guys to dissect .

Tim in the Netherlands will try and find info on this Pickem up Truck
I'm guessing the top got damaged and was then converted to a pickup however if the owner would finish the bed area and repaint it I think it could look very cool...

Was just looking at an old thread where 69Busboy had just purchased a Wild Westerner Rolling chassis and found the serial number 2232 204 959 also it was an automatic so this makes two with automatic transmissions. Collie is on the hunt for this WW.
Ok something funky is going on here that is the same serial number that Kirk said was sold to some person in Canada ??????

Really? Ill double check, but I'm pretty sure it went to Canada. Unless it came back? Sheesh, thank you for the work you do. 
Edit: Found his thread, and yep, thats the one I saved. I apologize for bad info, but my buddy who sold it said it went to Canada. 1000 Apologies.

Just checking in. I've had a 1973 Wild Westerner since 1996, bought it from my Uncle in Phoenix. He bought from the second owner. Second owner purchased in 1987 in Westminster, CA (have receipt, had 28,740 mi at time).
Mine is Kombi, green/blue striped upholstery on pull out bed (great!). Lived in Salt Lake City @ time of purchase. There were at least 3 buses w/the same paint job in the downtown area, I differentiated by the curtains. Also saw an extended top near downtown SLC.
Nothing but problems with engine. Had lots of work done @ the Bug Inn in SLC. Semi-automatic transmission. Love this bus, body in very good shape, but in storage for a decade now. The worst lemon (or lime), total money suck for me but I can't seem to part with it.
Used to have much more original paperwork. Let me know if there is anything I can look up/post for you. |

Last photo I have is from 2002 right before when to storage. Will scan, already snowing here so VW in storage, will provide photo of m code plate if I can get in w/o plow/shovel.
Went through folder again, wasn't sales recept from 1987, was warranty for engine overhaul. Remember my uncle stating he was second owner, but when found whatIi thought was receipt, assumed he was third.
Owner at time of overhaul moved to Phoenix, where my uncle purchased. Googled name and is listed in white pages (may not be the same guy, but full name including middle initial and likely age match). You interested in the info? May be an original owner. Never posted on this site, unsure of how to pass information w/o making public? |

As I started reading this I was thinking "why have I never seen a WW driving around Sandpoint, I have lived here for 18 years as of today." then I saw the part about the bus being in storage, and now I understand.
So, have we met? I'm Corey and I live on the north side of town. There is always some sort of VW bus in my front yard, unless I am out driving it.

I don't know what I've gotten myself into with this WW. My co-worker finally found the papers on the bus. The title is from someone in Castle Dale, UT who sold it in '03 to someone in Citrus Heights, CA then it was sold to someone in Roseville, CA, then sold to the old owner of Bugformance in Stockton who then sold it to my co-worker. And you guessed it...none of the previous owners bothered to register it in their name. This oughta be fun!!!
I took some new pics today of the ignition to see how bad it is. Can someone tell me if this is ok because I don't remember seeing this on my '79. Where the arrow is pointing theres a metal plate coming from the dash.
also, is this one of those hot start buttons?

Was this already disassembled when you bought it or did you take it apart?
Looking at the size and color of the red wires i would say it is an ignition start button. Or maybe the horn button? I would look and see where they go.
Typically what wears out is the plastic end on the switch where the key goes into the switch. It is fairly easy to replace and you can get a used one for Approx. $30.00. You still use the same key. There is a tiney tiny screw that holds the switch in place, remove it and the switch slides out the back leaving the tumbler or external piece that you put the key in intact.

The guy I bought it from disassembled it to try and get a key made. He also removed the two door handles
for the same purpose and ended up losing one of the handles and still didn't get a key.
None of this stuff bothered me much I just used all of the things wrong with the bus to help in negotiations
and I knew there was nothing that couldn't be fixed with a little help from all the good people on this site. It's gonna take me a long while to get it done, but I will.

The body looks excellent so its looks to me you just need to deal with mechanical and paperwork issues. Without looking at one i am assuming the pass door and drivers door handles are interchangeable maybe someone that has had them off can answer that for you. If that is the case just buy another handle for the passenger side from a junker with or without the key your choice. Non-Keyed alike door handles are not going to affect the value at all.
If you need to remove the ignition actual switch with the wires attached then you will need to lay between the front seats on the floor, feet in back area use a flat head screwdriver slightly larger than you use on eyeglasses (I mean tiny) and remove the microscopic screw that holds the switch in place. It is slightly larger than a pencil lead so it is easy to lose. Then grab the wires and pull the switch out. Then you can crank the engine with a screwdriver in the switch if needed. I haven't taken the tumbler out that the key goes in so maybe someone will chime in and tell you how to do that.
