I decided to properly secure my new 15" spare tire to the clam shell so it didn't bounce around.

Parts: I got all this at Ace Hardware

3" 3/8 Stainless Carriage Bolt
Nutt, lock washer, fender washer
3/8 T Handle

Porsche 968/944 Spare Tire Plate

http://www.ebay.com/itm/150879090647?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Drilled 3/8 hole in center of clam shell. Secured the carriage bolt with 'Quick Steel' epoxy on the underside (maybe not necessary but I didn't want the bolt to turn) and the lock washer and nut on top side.

I had to trim the 3" bolt down about 1/4 inch to allow the T handle to properly fit.

Perfect fit, but I've never heard of anyone's tire bouncing around in there. The clamshell holds it in pretty tight when bolted closed.

It only holds it tight if you have the original metal retainers installed. With a fully inflated 205/65/15 I had to remove the supports (replaced by bolts and nylon lock nuts) leaving a gap for the tire to move around. After replacing my front radiator hose with Van Cafe's $170 silicone jobbies I wanted to reduce potential damage. Also, the main point of contact of the unsecured tire is the streering U joint.
