|
|
Will it be easiest/necessary to remove the propane tank first to replace the valve?
The fitting that connects the regulator to the valve "looks" like it will tighten in one direction when I attempt to loosen it in the other?
Thanks. _________________ '87 Westy |

Hello, the propane tank is easy enough to remove, but if you remove the tank shield you should be able to unscrew the valve fairly easily. Best to remove the regulator first and then unscrew the service valve.
A member suggested using teflon paste not tape when replacing the fittings on a propane tank. My requlator was leaking, but I did not know until I had replaced the fill port and painted the tank. Are you sure your regulator is good? I got it locally from an RV place, but needed to shorten the copper tubes about an inch which required a flare tool. _________________ ☮️ |

Are you sure you need to replace your valve?
I thought I needed to replace my propane tank valve because it leaked propane out of the shaft (packing?) of the valve while I turned the valve on or off.
I didn't realize that there are seals that seal off the shaft when the valve is tightened 100% closed or 100% opened...I have had it cranked all the way open for the past year and still have propane.
So, if it only leaks out of the valve while you are in the midst of turning it off or on, but doesn't leak when it's turned hard against the CW or CCW stops, you might not need to replace it.
Just a thought...
Later,

Ok, I failed on that attempt. Got the regulator off just fine, but cannot get the valve off for anything. I even invented a few new words in the process.
Any tips on getting it out of there short of bringing it to the pros? I hate to bring my failings to them to chuckle at.......... _________________ '87 Westy |

Have you tried a big pipe wrench? You're not re-using the valve are you? _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25

I was able to turn spin it about 2X and that was it. That took quite awhile.
I'll get a bigger wrench.
Thanks. _________________ '87 Westy |

In this case it's the length that counts--not the girth-- _________________ T.K. |

Finally, a moment in this project to smirk. _________________ '87 Westy |
