|
|
Pulled my trans to check out the ring gear because of whining under acceleration. (needed a clutch too). Here is what I found.
also found these metal parts
I am far from an expert on ring and pinion wear, but the ring gear looks worn to me and am guessing that the metal parts are from a broken circlip somewhere deep inside.
The trans came from an 85 weekender w/ 100,000 miles on it.
Any one have a clue? _________________ 81 westy

I can't comment on what you found, but I had a trans whining under load once. Readjusting the shift linkage took care of it. _________________ 1984 Vanagon GL

That's a piece of the main circlip holding the mainshaft snugly in its ball bearing. This is from a heat build-up area in your transaxle, adjacent to 4th gear. I think you're more aware than the average guy, and have caught a developing problem in time. I'd suggest a rebuild now before major parts are ruined. The R&P are probably still OK. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

Hard to tell, but that ring gear looks ok to me. The metal shavings look somewhat normal.
You know your answer though, that broken circlip is no bueno. You're also on borrowed time with the 3/4 slider hub. It needs to be torn down and rebuilt; I had mine done at Rancho this last time and it's working great. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25

Yep, Gears is dead on, and I wouldn't bet against him being dead on right down to that main gear circlip. Though I'm curious where you found the chunks - they must have come out the drain, eh? I think you caught this before it got ugly.
So, same noise in all gears?

Yep same noise in all gears. Noise gets louder as load increases. Those chunks were stuck to the magnet... wonder where the rest of the cerclip is? Hopefully they did not damage any thing else. I am buying a used trans axel to replace this one. And will tare this one down my self, we will see if I ever get it back together. _________________ 81 westy

I just got the same whine. I pulled my trans to check out a spare I had. The spare whined in 1st and 2nd. So I put the original trans back in. It immediately started whining in all gears.....I don't understand it. I haven't pulled it back out yet but will soon. I have a 3rd trans to try. Just found at the pick n pull. 89k original 1986 model - I am sure it has the weak 3/4 slider though.
Anyway I look at it, one of my three will need a full rebuild. _________________ '89 Westy - EJ25/22 Frank 4.44 5mt

Yeah not as bad as it looks.
You need to take apart.
Bead blast.
Then assemble and blue to see the mesh.
Face it, you are in for a rebuild..... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!
