This is the first picture I've seen of a burnt Vanagon that actually made my heart drop. Don't know why. Any burnt van is sad, this is just beyond. |

Earlier in the thread, mentions of having AAA. I used to, but they just seem to get more expensive. I have Geico insurance for van, car and motorhome. Ever get your motorhome towed? My fuel pump quit as I was leaving Yellowstone at the end of the season. Geico sent a tow truck, the driver had to remove the drive shaft, do all sorts of stuff on front end, then he towed me to Idaho Falls, about 135 miles to the nearest repair facility. No charge for me. I figured it was about $2800 for the tow.
I do have pictures, but the Van isn't in the pic. We followed in the van, watching the MH getting towed at about 65 mph, actually faster than I usually take it.
Now, just recently I had to be towed from Jackson back to Ystone (the Van), for a dirty fuel filter. This time, my buddy came down and pulled me back with his pickup. (use the tow setup I use to tow behind the motorhome) No pics of this one. _________________ Live Fulltime in motorhome

Fuel pump failure (instant failure--very odd) or might just be the relay. In any case, it died in the middle of a very busy intersection in Denver as I was taking one of my daughters to a birthday party. I pushed it two blocks to a side street in heavy traffic, then we walked the remaining mile to the party.
At what point does one throw in the towel and buy a VW CC or some other equally sober type of vehicle and just rent a freaking RV for roadtrip adventures?
The bright side: out of a Christmas parade, a sleepover, a gingerbread house-making party, and a birthday party, my daughter said that the breakdown and walk was the most fun thing she got to do over the weekend. _________________ Joe T.

Can a new guy play with some Eurovan pics?
I debated a Vanagon but one of my main goals was to be able to to get a motorcycle or two inside!
I got to start towing VW vans before I've even begun
Picked up this broken down 2002 GLS for a song. Needs the timing chains done (runs smooth above 1600 rpm but won't idle.)
Towed it from NJ to CO
Then a few days later I picked up this wrecked 1993 Weekender for $50 less than the song I got the 02 for.
Spend about a whole week towing Eurovans around.
In the process of putting new chains in the 02. I parted out the Weekender but kept the pop top parts and the interior bits to convert the 02 GLS into a custom pop top camper |

On our way to Morocco 2011: There was just one hose I haven’t replaced doing the engine swap, that was the one that started to leak!
On our way back from Tagliamento (Italy) 2012: Somehow the immobilizer got activated, no one knows why, the next day the engine started again. Now I always take a second control unit with me!

Do you have to ask AAA to send a flat bed (is that what it's called?) to tow or do they know to send it? Do you pay more for this?
Why do they tow a car w/ the front wheels up and most of the Westies are also towed front wheels up?
Obviously flat bed is best, next best, front or rear wheels up?

AAA 90% of the time it's a flat bed, but you can ask for one. No extra cost for me. Thank you! I've always wondered why so many here have the front wheels up. I always thought the front wheels were up on my car b/c it was FWD, so w/ RWD I'd expect those up.
I've never noticed a flat bed towing a car here. It's been years since I needed a tow, but know BCAA (our AAA) didn't send a flat bed, just a regular tow truck.

When I had to use BCAA for my popped ECU, it was a flat-bed. But I think I may have left it in gear on the flat-bed, probably not good it was awhile ago...
(Un)fortunately, i have no picture of this particular tow, nor the one in North Dakota, nor the two in Seattle area... _________________ '91 Syncro 16 Reimo Hightop Conversion, eTDI |
