Do you have any pics of your work Fhak915 & danfromsyr? |
Mzalac,
I have not done it but I did take the sliders apart and modify them for rear sliders. I am very sure I could do it. Was actually thinking doing this since I have an Adventure wagon and the driver sided slider is nonfunctional because it is blocked by the cabinets. Check out my Gallery photos of the rear slider. It is do-able but the lock bar needs to be had from passenger side window to do it right. _________________ Frank

just thinking outloud.......could you not remove both drivers side and passenger side windows and then re-install the drivers side window on the passenger side, and vice versa? would not then the locking channels be on the bottom and open from the rear? _________________ 85 westy-1.9-standard trans, FAS GenV 2.0 |

can't flip sides on the 85+ pass side sliding windows (sliding door window) as it's smaller than the drivers side with the new easy handle & mechanism.. so you have to get creative on that..
no pics of the work, just went out and got-r-dun they're really not that difficult to dissassemble and reassemble.. it helps to get a long nuff bar clamp that will also spread to open the frames and to reclose the frame to the glass.

mzalak - let us know how this turns out. Am wondering about extra noise/water seepage from flipping the windows. Also, any pics of the slider reversal process would be great! _________________ 2WD 86 Westy

$229 is definately closer to where it should be.. a nice price point compared to $399 as originally listed.
as for the reveresed window channel leaking that's a no, there isnt that much hydraulic/air pressure on the side to force the water inside. and the seal channel makes a physical dam to block surface pushed water.
where I had a leak was the new bottom cut in the aluminum channel where I had to shorten it. I was supposed to use some clear silicone in the gap/joint when I put it back together. and either forgot or figured it wouldn't get around the glass. but I've since sealed that cut int he channel with a surface applicaation of silicone. (inside the channel would have been better though). _________________

When I picked up one of my van from the body shop 2 years ago after a full paint job they reveresed the windows accidently. I thought well I will live with it and try it out as it does seem logical and gives more air for sleeping.
The only draw back I had was water on the highway would get blown into the van where the slider meets the other piece of glass. I might of needed new felt but I decided to just go back to the body shop and have them flipped back to their normal postion and problem solved. ***This only happened at HWY speeds***
I am a fan of the rear windows to slider conversions. _________________ 1980 Vanagon Cali Import 86,000Miles

They are clearing them out because they DO NOT FIT!!!! I have helped install 3 of these windows and they are a major PITA. You have to remove the piece between the plastic vents and the glass and use sikaflex or sealent instead and it stills in incredibly hard. I can't believe they even sell them....if I were them I would be ashamed to put my name on those! _________________ 1984 Vanagon Westfalia Syncro Hightop

Almost finished with my sliding windows.
Just need to paint my white screen frames black.
So far no extra wind noise or rain leakage.

you can't swap side to side on the 85-91
the slider door window is smaller than the DS sliding window.
so you have to dissassemble and swap the parts. w/o the latch ending up on the top. _________________
