mr. warehouse was right, the hardest part were the hinges. I used some 16 ga flat steel I had from another project and studied the photos on here of the hinge. Keep in mind, I just did this with really simple tools so they're not perfect, but are serviceable and should look nice once I round the corners and stuff.

This project was a lot harder than I thought.

Just a bump for more ladder pics if anyone's got some. Looking for some ideas. Folding or not.

Here you are: foldable Splitbus ladder from BUSCH Auto-Kuli Köln/Germany. This company also made car and bus roofracks. More pics in the camper gallery.

I like the folding ones! Eventually when I learn to weld (and get a roof rack) I'm gonna have to try my hand at making one...

Here a direct comparison on foldable ladders, both are fixed on the transversal bar you need on your Westy roofrack legs if you want to use a ladder (it is absolutely not adviseable to stick ladder onto the aluminium gallery tube- it would bend and tear off imediately when somenone steps on ladder) :

This ladder is made by German HWE, the most "common" original roofrackladder for Splitbuses and Westies:

This ladder is made by German BUSCH Auto-Kuli (Köln/Cologne), harder to find:

Here's one a friend and I made for mine a couple years ago. It's electrical conduit, bolted to rack at top, welded to rear corner that needs replacing anyway. gotta figure out something once corner is done. Cant tell in the pics, but rungs are contoured to follow the corner. Cost all of ten bucks to make, has held 250lbs.
