So now I know of two aircraft manufacturers that thought about going into the car business. But SAAB actually made a go of it.

And you can't forget about Nissan. I also think that Mercedes, Rolls Royce, and BMW made a foray into the airplane business.

I was thinking more of airplane manufacturers that decided to try the automobile business rather than the other way around. Mercedes, Rolls Royce, etc. I think all started making cars first, then planes. Beechcraft, Mitsubishi and SAAB I think built aircraft first, then decided to try their hand at cars.

Hi 79SV,
At the risk of hijacking this thread, I'll try not to butcher history; I could well likely be wrong on some points here. Many of the Japanese aircraft manufacturers before/during WWII were "heavy industries" i.e. they made a lot of things in addition to planes. After the war planes were a no-no, so they had to get into other things. Mitsubishi into cars, Kawasaki into motorcycles, etc. Likewise Germany, no planes, so Messerschmitt made those cool front door cars, and Heinkel among other things did some coachbuilding. All of these companies have a fascinating history, though not all of it necessarily good. OK, back to weird looking vehicles... Smile
