|
|
On the Portland Craigslist was a recent ad from Peacevans in Seattle.
One of their intriguing mods/options is a hinged battery tray that attaches underneath the Van.
It does look pretty nifty, and could potentially open up a lot of storage space, but wowser, they charge $550 base price just for the mounting bracket! That seems pretty darn expensive to me. I'm not a welder, but it seems like this would be a pretty simple and inexpensive thing to make.
It seems to me that Alaric has rigged up something like this. Has anyone else done this, and if so, could you respond with what you did and perhaps a few photos?

thats a great idea, ive been racking my brain trying to figure out how to add 2 aux batteries without killing the under bench storage. great opportunity to do something with the now vacant boxes under the front seats. _________________ I don't check these forums daily and often loose track of threads and comments. I don't know, that looks pretty bomber to me. After time and fabbing, materials, plus blood and swearing, $550 seems like a decent price. _________________ 84 Westfalia

The tray would be simple and cheap to fab, the real cost is the AGM battery that they supply with it. |

The plain tray is $550. Add a 160 amp hour battery and some hardware and the price goes up $700 more.
From the Craigslist ad:
"BASIC Package $1250 - Installed & Tax Included
-House battery & tray installed, wired, ready to go. Includes 160AH AGM Battery, tray(everything in DIY package), 100amp battery isolator, 10 gang fuse block, high amperage fuse, loomed wiring, soldered terminals, heat shrink. Wired from new house battery to the stock main battery. Self jump start capable."
Now this may well be a fair price. But frugal guy that I am, I am looking for other options.

It great I forgot I have it there. I think I paid 260$ for the battery but if I did not have the aux fuel tank I would have went with the 170 ah battery same with but a little longer. I used heavy duty door hinges for the swing part. |

Jiminy xmas that is a lot of dough for a empty tray.
The reason that I bought my welder is because I am too cheap to pay for another welder's labor cost. |

has anyone put the batteries above the transmission on a 2wd? there's tons of space, zero risk of bottoming out or clearance for a 2nd propane tank. _________________ I don't check these forums daily and often loose track of threads and comments. I've always wondered if a Syncro Fuel Tank would fit on a 2WD in the same spot, or is the body/trans too tight. _________________ It's just advice, do whatever you want with it!

not enough room with the trans in the stock location.
you could lower the driveline i you really wanted to do it. _________________ I don't check these forums daily and often loose track of threads and comments. Please PM me a reminder if you're waiting on a reply. Thanks! |

While most of the 1.8T installs I see are into Syncros,
a 2wd would require a lowered driveline and could add the benefit of more capacity in fuel. but would seem alot of work.
on my brother's 2wd we cut in a box over the Trans to carry 2 batteries under the bed cushion.

that's crazy money! I would just buy a Honda generator. you would have the option of using it around your house as well in case the power goes out,on the job,etc.,etc. |

Here's another one I did with just the battery tray, no storage area.
Fantastic location and relatively easy install. |
