Great, great work!
Does it drive as good as new? Do you have an original SportsBug stripe kit you are considering to apply? How did you paint your taper tips- scuff the chrome ones and apply heat-resistant black paint? |
well I wouldnt say it drives as good as new but it does handle pretty well, since I did replace all the bushings, struts, strut bearings, ball joints etc in the front end. still need an alignment on the front end.
I do not have the stripe Kit or know where to get one yet, still contemplating painting the stripe or not.
the taper tips were in a box of parts that came with the car, but they were just chrome ones scuffed and repainted. I scuffed them and painted them with Black Epoxy Primer from Southern Polyurethanes. I used that black on all the exterior black parts, i.e Bumpers, trim and handles. their black Epoxy primer has a UV additive that will hold up to Sunlight and is suitable for topcoat. _________________ early-

well I got the front end aligned and what a nice difference that makes. steers straight, no pull , no shimmy. rear end was within spec as well.
I bit the Bullet and decided to Cover the seats since my stock seats were so ratty and the foam and coco fiber was gone.
I spoke to Carol at Sewfine for an Hour , friday after thanksgiving and decided to go with her Product. Since nobody can find the Original fabric for the Inserts I went with her extreme vinyl for the whole cover rather than have inserts of a different material.
I ordered the covers in Extreme vinyl, along with Front seat back foam ( from the 77-79 convertible) and rear seat seat foam as well.
I was able to use my front seat bottoms and since the bolsters were pretty broken down I was able to glue them together and pad them with felt padding and wrap them with a fabric material. I also added some felt to the metal frames that the Bolsters sit on - to make them a bit more padded. the Bolster covers she supplied had 1/8 scrim foam inside which covered up any imperfections I may have added to the bolsters.
Currently I am running them Without the Headrests - for now. I can add them at a later date, but I kinda like the Nostalgic look they have as Lowbacks. It really opens up the interior and makes backing out in reverse a lot nicer.
Please Post your thoughts with or with out Headrests ?
I must say the quality of Sewfine seat covers is amazing! everything Fit like it was supposed to. they are more expensive but the quality is there ! and the extreme vinyl is very nice and leather like.
here's a couple Pics:
I have pics of the Recovering process if anyone needs more information.

still undecided about the Headrests - on or off
I'm getting bored since I've just about completed this car.. after working on it just about daily for the last 8 months.
maybe I need a new project !! ha !
here's a Pic of my Old 74 Porsche 914 I had back in the late 70's - early 80's.. How I wish I had this one back!.. I traded it for a 71 Porsche 911 targa.

I've had 5 914s
That old creamsicle would be worth a ton of money now!
Last was a '75 2.0L that I totally restored.

when I got that creamsicle back in '77 it only had 37,000 miles on it ! it was sweet! amazing what they are worth today!.. but the 911 targa I traded it for would be worth a big chunk today also.. so I guess that's the way the ball bounces.
914's are fun cars!. yours looks very nice! _________________ early-

Yes we get spoiled here in California...
The orange car was displayed at the San Jose International Auto show and at the Blackhawk Museum as well as featured in a 914 magazine. Several years ago!
It had concours body and paint work, even though it was a track car. _________________ Doc

I purchased a 71 standard a bit ago and it had these style wheels on it, I was wondering what they were heh. I know porsche 914 used a similar wheel for awhile but I never knew they came on a VW |

Stripe Kit.
I just received a Stripe kit from beaverstripes in Phoenix and wanted to share with fellow sports bug fans whom might be looking for the same.
this kit looks pretty good, steve of beaverstripes made a copy from an original vw kit ( that a fellow samba member brought in to him).
I will be putting the stripes on and will update this thread with progress.

Hi,
I went to their web site and could not find the sports bug stripes. I guess I will need to call Steve there?
How much was the stripe kit?
Is it difficult to apply? Don't want to screw it up!
Thanks

pics of the stripe:
got the stripe from BeaverStripes of AZ. if anyone is interested, contact them via their website - email address, they can quote you a price and shipping.
here is the process and some pics of the job.
first off I replaced the upper Hinge Pin on the Drivers Door cause it had a little bit of play in it and it was bothering me. I had soaked it with bust rust for a long time before trying to remove it.
I also removed the Drivers mirror to get it out of the way.
The stripe kit from Beaverstripes comes Rolled up so unroll it and let it settle out flat for a few days before you start the process. it would help if it was warm in your garage or workspace.
1. remove all of the Trim on the car, and Remove the Plastic clips that hold the Trim on, order a New package of Plastic Trim Clips.
2. Clean the surface really well. I used a standard Wax & Grease Remover that body shops use. same stuff I used when I painted the car. it is a high quality Isopropyl Alcohol.
3. use Masking tape to Lay the Stripe out on the car so you can see how much you need to trim and mock up your layout . I also put small pencil marks on the body where the paper meets the body so I had a reference line to lay the stripe to. measure the Front Ends of arrow to make sure they match on both sides of car leaving the Black trim to run within the Black part of the stripe.
the instructions state that the Stripe is an Air Release stripe - meaning the it cannot be installed with soapy water, stripe experts might disagree with this but I'm no expert so I followed the directions as told.
the stripe kit comes in 7 pieces and included an extra red stripe for the back vent portion to be used if needed.
we worked the Rear Vent first, then worked from Rear to Front working each section at a time - rear quarter, door , then front quarter.
4. instructions state to start from the middle of the stripe and cut off the backing paper working from the Center of the taped portion out to the Right using the squeegee to work out the bubbles. then work the process back from Center to the Left. After getting the section of stripe on then Remove the Top Paper from the stripe to reveal the finished stripe.
the hardest part of this process was getting the bubbles out of the centerline seam that runs down the side. I still have a few bubbles on the seam but I am hoping that when it finally gets warmed up around here it will lay out.
As for the Rear vent, I actually cut out each vent portion and folded the vinyl onto each of the 42 vent rails on each side, I was expecting to use the Aluminum vent cover to go over the stripe anyway, however I could probably get away with just the vinyl stripe in that space.
5. install your new trim clips, you might have to use a small drill bit to make sure the body holes are clean so they will hold the clip. use a small punch to drive the pin into the clip which holds it tight to body, and pop your trim back in place. it is pretty tricky around the Flat superbeetle trim piece that goes on each front quarter panel ( covering the body weld section). that panel can be a pain, but you can make it work
I also picked up some vinyl 3/4" yellow for the Bumpers shown in the photo's. I removed the bumpers to put the vinyl on in one piece.
I also added the headrests back on to the seats as shown below. I do kind of like the headrests on and am pretty happy with the results.
thanks to steve at beaverstripes for setting me up and thanks to the other Samba member whom took the old stripe to them to create the copy.
cheers... _________________ early-
