I might have some spare parts for the stc. I would have to look around.

Just came across this while looking for some Jeep bumpers for my son's off road beater Thing. At first I thought it was a kit but apparently it's a bumper with this attached. Actually I found where it's a retro kit for under $300. I'm thinking about doing something like this and trying it out. I like how it doesn't attach to the body in any way (other than the bumper mounts that are just part of the body). What do you guys think?

^ Works a lot better on the Jeep with a heavy duty bumper attached to the frame itself. Remember that the body sheetmetal would have to support 100% of the spare tire and bumper weight, which gets a lot heavier bouncing around offroad.
It would work pretty well if you could find a way to tie it into the frame. Or possibly some plates to spread the load. |

I think it's a good idea with the bumper and a hitch trailer together for support the spare tire. _________________ __________________________________________

I just pulled a spare tire holder from a 86 Bronco II that I plan to modify to work on a Thing. |

Does anyone out there have the spare on the front or the hood? |
Here is my custom built front mount from a post earlier this year:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=350780&highlight=spare+tire
I like the front mount because:
- It's mounted solely to the bumper, no sheet metal is molested.
- I adds a little better weight distribution.
- Makes me imagine I'd do better in a front end collision(purely speculation)
- Gives an even MORE unconventional look to an already unconventional looking vehicle. |

This carrier was a unique one that surfaced at the German Motor works show 2005 and got posted in the Gallery.
It attaches to the bumper and one spot on the deck lid:

and open:

I like how the license plate holder is in the spare,
and the angle of the tire seems to match the decklid angle.
Nice work, and I assume it must be a custom one-off.
Looks like the car previously had the TS tire carrier, btw.
I know, it's not an ideal setup for engine access,
but maybe the owner puts a cushion on there and sits native-american style. |
I am restoring a Mercedes 220 (1953) allegedly owned by Groucho Marx and the add-on external spare tire carrier was part of the accessory package which the MB dealer added. Very similar |

|

I have a simple question. I have the standard style rear tire carrier. And it came to me in pieces. I'm missing the proper bolts that mount the main arm to the upper bracket and lower to the bumper. This is were it pivots on. Looks like it has to be a shoulder style bolt so the carrier can swing without binding. Anyone have the proper set up or what they used? It's quite a large bolt and it cannot be that long were it goes through the bottom bumper otherwise it will hit. thanks. |

This is from the original broshure that VWoA put out with the rack. Doesn't have the bolt sizes. I think the bottom pivot is setup the same as the top.

I agree with you for all the reasons you mention. I like it best. I'm thinking to do the same. In Mexico many Combis (VW Bus) used to carry the spare tire at the front. Greetings |

I have a rear tire carrier, that I have had for 10+ years, never mounted it. finally found another 15" centerline copy, so my spair will match. going to buy another engine cover(so I don't mess my OG paint one up) I have the thing shop repro, powdercoated silver. going to cut a large hole in the engine cover for cooling. I made bigger backing plates a few years ago, hope they help with the stress of the weight. will still carry 14" spair up front, I have one of the gas cans that fits in the spair.

what do you all think of a tire recessed into the front hood???
Is there enough space ???
does this have any advantage - other than it COULD look cool??
I have 2 ideas of how to drain the water ----- and one would leave the spare and tub mounted to the trunk floor and the hood would have a large hole trimmed out to go over the spare (like a shaker scoop)

If you go to my photo's you will see my tan car. I used a trunk area from a Dodge Omni. The space is limited. The drain is a funnel setup in front of the gas tank. Keep in mine that you will not have a place for the curtains. |

I know I am resurrecting this thread from death but I was wondering if anyone could give me some of the basic measurements for this tire carrier? I think I can fab one up if I had some measurements to go off of. |
