I have a set of front disc brakes on my Avenger:
I can't for the life of me find a dust cap that will fit the drivers side. I bought one from BugCity at a show and he said it was for all Beetles. it didn't work. I thought maybe one from a link pin version (which slides inside the hub versus over the top like the later versions) might work but thats a no go.
Any idea what application might fit? I replaced the calipers with the VW replacement versions so I am assuming its VW based. |

Strange that the rotors look like Ghia rotors, which would lead one to presume that the Beetle drum/Ghia rotor dust cap would fit... hmmm....

Pull the speedo cable back in far enough on left rotor so that you could try the right side cap on the left rotor...
And measure the bore ID of both rotors -

The cap on the right slides over the center of the rotor. It does not tuck inside. It looks similiar to the one I got for the left except the one for the left does not have a small relief cut on the side of the cap that the right one does. I have not tried to see if the right works on the left yet.
The outer part of the center of the rotor is tapered. No matter how hard I smack the left cap it won't stay on. Its not even close. The cap is smooth on the inside and the center section of the rotor is tapered. You guys can imagine how that won't work. There is nothing for the cap to grab and it can't be help on by pressure because the more you tap it on the harder it wants to pop off.
I will get some more pics tonight. |

I ran into this on 3 disk conversion kits. It was not the rotor, it is the caps that are made wrong. If you have an original from the drum setup it will work. For my last one I just attached it with a bead of silicone. Strong, seals out water etc, easily removable. Just noticed you say your rotor is tapered. I did not have any taper. Is it tapered a lot? _________________ Licensed Automotive Service Technician

Well...problem solved.
In went out to measure the taper and much to my surprise there was a flat section on he rotor before it tapered. So I took my digital caliper and measured the rotor. I then measured the ID of the original cap I bought.
The rotor OD was 3/4 of mm larger that the ID of the cap.
A little sandpaper to take the paint off the rotor...a little sanding drum to the inside of the cap...and viloa! It tapped right on.
Thanks guys. The project gets a little bit closer to being done |
