I just want to see, I might be putting a bad boy motor in a bus of mine shortly so I wondered if anyone has 150 hp or more. Any turbo bays out there? I like a big type 1 motor with all the trimmings. Very Happy

In the words of Muir:
"I drive my '71 bus at a steady 65mph, and the bug at 75 mph and that's about it for safety, for me. You can go to hell in your own way."

Personally, I just wouldn't want to be driving a brick at 90mph. Yeah, it's cool to have done it, just from an engineering and gee-whiz-that's-cool perspective, but I'm a bit thin-skinned for that.

Not everyone uses their bus for the same reasons.
Its all about having fun.

I could go out and buy a car off the shelf and turn a better time but its about getting the most out of what you have.

I started with a stock 1600DP with a holley bugspray.

My bus now runs a DRD 1915 with about 145 hp. Someday maybe a turbo.

BTW we race on a track, not on the street.

My friend races a fully dressed out camper with a CB 2165. IIRC his last 1/4 mile time was 16 sec run.

This probably qualifies. At least for a local Bay.
These pics are from last Saturday at our weekly show at the Scottsdale Pavilions. It belongs to a great guy and gal from the German Toyz club and when it's on the move it catches a lot of eye and ear attention. The gal says it scrapes the freeway reflectors. Need a snow plow up there in Prescott? Laughing

And yes, it's ear candy with it's bad a$$ T-1 turbo drag motor. So a guess would be that it's up in the 300+ HP range.

Having high horse power doesn't necessarily mean you have to drive 90 MPH. It means you can get up to speed with modern traffic in a safe and quick manner. It also allows you to climb passes at safe speeds rather than having cars come up behind you at 30-40 MPH faster than you can travel.

I am building a1776 for my 70, and it should end up around 80-85 HP when I am done. That'll be enough for me. Until I install the 140 HP Subaru engine in a few years.

Stolen from OvalInAz's photobucket, so don't blame me if it's not hosted on TS gallery!

Well I like to go fast, and these buses are just an awesome machine to race. I want to burn fuel and smile while I do it, plus I want to smash the gas and leave all others behind me, then when it becomes one lane again I can slow down and dictate everyone just like all the others drivers here. Cool

Mine's pretty fast.

0 to dangerously unstable happens alot faster than it did when stock.

I think the "dangerously unstable" component of our busses needs enginered out before speed comes in.

Well I like the Subaru motors but aren't the vast majority of them stock? Have you put any hi performance Subaru engine parts on it? I'm certain a type 1 can smoke a Subaru if it has the right stuff. Very Happy

Mine may have @120hp. Just a .030 2.3l ford with some vintage speed parts on it. No stock busses can hang, neither could a 2.2 subaru vanagon. It is what it is...and thats a sketchy handling pig. I've had it above 90mph, I value my life too much to ever do that again.
