|

Just bought a 1977 Westy after 18 years of looking and convincing my wife. (I know). The wipers are currently on a toggle switch on high speed when flipped. The slow speed works when I give it power. When I plug the 5 pin in from the column I get nothing. I need the wiper blades to park in order to get the vehicle on the road, (Ontario standard) took column apart best I could. Not sure of where to go from here.
Anyone with some advice? I need them to park and 2 speeds would be great. _________________ 1972 VW Westy (Hit by dumptruck)

I had a similar issue. I only had one speed setting working.
When you take the switch out, which I had to do for other reasons a couple of times, you have to pull it out by grabbing the bundle of wires from underneath the steering column. I found that one of the wires had pulled loose in the connector.
Make sure they are all well seated in the clip. _________________ 1976 Westy Marigold Yellow

possible/likely the switch failed and someone bypassed it with the toggle. find the plug on the wiper motor, it's right close to the crotch of the defrost plastic Y duct. follow the wires from the plastic terminal housing on the motor and see what you see. you can jumper power to the motor to see if it works on both speeds and parks. it's pretty cramped under there so not easy to work but you have to start there to see what's been done. _________________ SL |

I have tried the 5 prong switch but cannot get 12V from either the low or high speed. (Used a meter) I would love to get the switch working. I will try to see if the wires are intact at the lever switch at the steering column. I will keep you posted. Any ideas of what the 2 other wires are at the motor.?
One is groung. Middle one
One is high speed
one is low speed _________________ 1972 VW Westy (Hit by dumptruck)

The toggle was already on the dash when I bought the bus. Does anyone know if the engine needs to be running for the wipers to work? or just the ignition on? _________________ 1972 VW Westy (Hit by dumptruck)

Just ignition on, do the headlights work when the key is on?, they are also powered by X from the ignition switch, if the switch is bad neither will work. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

ignition on, engine does not have to be running.
if someone installed a toggle switch for the wipers there's little reason to believe the stalk switch on the steering column would be operational at all, surely it was bypassed / jumpered in some fashion to allow the toggle to do its job.
find the motor and follow the wires from it to wherever they now go, then you can progress to testing the motor and column switch. but you can't do this until you understand what's been done to the original wiring - it's been modified for sure if there's a toggle switch on the dash. _________________ SL |

No to having the bus running to operate wipers. Key on does the job as long as the PO didn't Hack that too.
Similar to your old 74 bug in wiring you will probably find that your wiper
switch will need to be replaced. You do need to have a repair manual to be safe and buy a Switch from Scott.
disconnect the Battery before doing any work under the dash. And if you
don't feel comfortable doing the work take it to a shop that can fix it right. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

Ignition only.
The self-park feature merely takes 12 volts independently of the switch and energizes the motor until the gearbox position opens the circuit. That would be the green and grey/black wires.
The ground wire is critical, make sure it is snug and clean where it plugs into the ground tree on the air plenum.
Colin
I have repaired a high speed not working by disassembling the switch, but it is tricky due to spring-loaded plastic detents and spring-loaded brass contacts . . .

Thanks Amskeptic. Thats what I need to know. If I powered the grey black with 12V constantly and the Green to ground then got a 2 way switch to power the wiper for slow and fast then I should have it covered?
My real issue is the parking of the wipers. I can get the slow and fast speeds alright. I am less concerned with the actual steering column switch working.
The steering column looks like a dogs breakfast anyway. _________________ 1972 VW Westy (Hit by dumptruck)

No no no. Green is no ground, this ain't American AC electrical!
Green energizes 53 black through the switch to the motor until the self-park shuts it off.

the fourth position of the switch is a phantom. it's for intermittent wipers and most buses have this switch position disabled with a breakaway tang on the switch assembly. i believe the intermittent position would be position -1 of the switch, then 0 (off), 1(low), 2(high). _________________ SL |

Found the problem and fixed the wipers thanks for the help. It seems when a new ignition switch was installed they forgot to wire in the wipers. I powered where it needed and bingo they are working now. Thanks for your help all.
Off to the next problem. _________________ 1972 VW Westy (Hit by dumptruck)

The good news is my wiper motor works, but I am having the same problem that you described here.
How did you find the lost power to the switch? Someone recently repaired my ignition switch and I think it is doing the same. Did you have to remove the steering wheel and ignition and switch?
Thanks

I fixed it after 3 days of fiddling and occasionally blowing fuses (which is always a set back).
Took off the steering wheel, cleaned the contacts for the horn which now sound much better, removed the wiper and turn indicator switches, clean everything with compressed air and tested. All working well except the wiper fluid due to cracked hoses etc.
Thanks to the forum for lots of info which I read for hours _________________ Andres ~ Co-Owner Black Sheep Inn Ecuador
