kombis seats don't have an ashtray. maybe the rear seat passengers got no grab bar either on the earliest models. (the passengers in the rear seat get no love, or at least no handle to hold onto if they are gettin some lovin' and no ashtray for the smokes when they are done)
I had to dig deep, but I think I found a picture of a '50/early '51 kombi with a no grab bar on the middle seat. I can't tell for sure due to the angle of the picture. the picture is from a magazine's road test of a no-rear-window kombi in new jersey. I'll try to get a scan of it sometime.

$3500 for a middle seat is the equivalent of $65,000 for a complete running and driving barndoor in nice condition. no one wants to believe it but that's the price of admission....and you don't even get a barndoor mafia T-shirt for the price!
