Yes, that should work, but I would test fit one tyre to check that the rim does not protrude too much.

Quote:
Why go for 195s upfront?
Only if you want that extra wide look, and you already have 195s at the back. But as stated, 195s will most probably rub.

Quote:
Also Pirell, here don't stock 165/80s! Only 165/65. They have 175/65/15 though would they be ok all round?
175/70s are already a tiny bit too small, 65 profile would be far too small in diameter. At that ratio, the correct width is 195, to maintain the overall diameter.

Quote:
Also if 175 is the ideal one, would 165's not expose the rims too much?
Could be, but I don't think so. 5.5 inch equals 135 mm, that is inside the grooves of the rim, where the rubber lies, then the flange is probably 6-7 mm on each side, means that the whole rim is 150 mm wide in total. That leaves 15/2 mm of rubber to protrude. Tire dimensions are not always exact, so a test fit may be the best way to be sure. I had some 165s on a previous set of 5.5s and they fit like a glove.

Right. Thanks! My current tyres on front and back are snow tyres and they say 165 SR 15 which I believe translates to 165/78/15. The clearance for the rims is fine with them.

So I know I'll be ok if I get 165/80/15 all round, but I can't decide if I should go for the 195/65/15 you suggested at the back. Do you have any photos of them at the rear to see what they look like? Also, will having different tyres at the rear affect speedo accuracy or fuel economy? It just seems that it would make more sense to have all tyres the same, but not sure!

EDIT Hmm I have found some photos of 195/65/15 on the rear and I like how they look, seem to fill out the wells nicely at stock height. My only issue is if it will affect speedo reading or fuel economy or handling?

Like Joel said, if your wheels are 5.5 (and to me they look it), 185/65 is an ideal replacement tire size. If they are 4.5, you pretty much have to stay with 165R15.

Ok now I re read this, I don't know if they are 4.5 or 5.5!! No stamps on the rims anywhere!! 185/65 is what seems to be recommended for 5.5 and 165 for 4.5.

Also what do all the endings mean like 88T or 92TXL!?!

I am thinking now to go for 185/65/15 since they are only 0.7% different on speedo accuracy to the stock 175/70/15.

the rims you show on the car with snow tires definitely look like 5.5" rims.
Those rims appear to be the smaller offset wheels from a sport bug...

195/65/15s on 5.5" ET40 914 sport wheels...

Thanks, so I have 5.5 rims. Your car looks great, the 195s look nice too but does it affect speedo accuracy at all or economy?

What tyres do you have at the front?

Same tires and rims front and rear....the speedo is very close to stock accuracy...the 195x65 tires are very nearly the same overall diameter and rolling circumference than 165x80s.
In your situation your tires may stick out past the fenders with the wheels you have...you may need to stay with smaller sizes to keep the tread inside the fenders.

Careful, your rims have a different offset and a super beetle track is a bit wider than the standard pictured above. 195's would stick out in front. A 185/70 would be ideal for you. A little wider for those rough Turkish roads, but not to big to stick out and as noted above, it shouldn't effect your speedo or mileage much.

Hmm great thanks a lot guys. In that case I think I will go for these Hankook K425 in size 185/65/15 for all four rims:

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Hankook/K425-Kinergy-Eco.htm

They're available here in Turkey, good price and have generally really good reviews even when compared to Pirellies or Dunlops etc.

For 5 tyres it comes to around the equivalent of 350 USD. Or should I just get 4 since the spare would only be used on the rare occasion..?

Hankooks are a decent tire, they should work well for you. I run Hankooks on my bus and they handle pretty good.

That's good to know! Seems silly to pay extra for top brand tyres when the Hankooks seem to have such a good reputation. I will have my work cut out in hand-sanding the rims when the tyres are off...

If you can have them powder coated, I highly recommend it. I had the sport wheels on my '79 powder coated almost 20 years ago and a little wipe with Windex, and they still look new.

I have found a local sand blaster and powder coater amazingly! Will get some quotes.

Pricing here in the states runs about $30-60 per wheel. Make sure they clean them well, like paint, it's all in the prep. If your wheels are rusty and pitted, the powder coating will not "fill it in." They'll look better, and will be protected, but you'll still see the pits. If you can find a real clean set, use those, no sense investing in a damaged wheel if you can avoid it.

I recently had the wheels on my wife's bus powder coated [the one with the Hankooks on them]. Here's how they turned out.

Many shops will try to sell you 185/65 15s but they are really short on diameter and look silly in my opinion. Better then to go for 195/65 rear and 165/80 front then, if you can't get the 175/70s.

Ok, and 195/65 rear and 165/80 front will be fine with 5.5 sport bug wheels?

fyi.. here is a pic of Sport Bug wheels with available 185/65/R15 tyres mounted.

do they look silly to you ?

I think the OP has already decided to go with the 185/65/15's so no, they don't look silly.

No they don't look silly, they look great and have cemented my decision to go for them! Also, you spell tyre the English way which is interesting Very Happy

Thanks for the powdercoating info jhicken, its about 30 usd per rim here which is good value, but i may just hand sand and prep them and use spray paint since i will be advertising the car for sale soon but at a good price so if a buyer comes up i'll sell. If i had the spare cash i would definitelydo it but unfortunately i have other responsibilities!

My current tyres are radial 'tube type' which I have learnt are not common anymore. My rims have some rust spots and body filler on them, some of whoch are around the valve. Do i need to get tubed tyres again or will tubeless be fine? Are my 5.5 inch rims priginally for tubed or tubeless, or will either be fine?

If you have sport rims they were originally made for tubeless tyres.

If you are going to paint, consider having your rims at least sand blasted to remove as much old paint and rust as possible. Best to start with a clean, smooth surface.

I have 5.5 sports rims, or at least i think i do i am still confused between sports and just super beetle wheels.

I currently have tube type tyres on my rims, does that mean then that they are not sports rims?

No, it probably means someone put tube type tyres on your 5.5" sport rims.

Most likely that was what was available to the PO, or if the rims are in very bad shape, bent and rusted enough that they won't hold air, then the PO got tubed tyres to accommodate the problem.

The only way to really know is to remove the old tyres. If the inside is badly pitted or dented, specially around the outer lip where the tyre seals, then you'll also need to add tubes. It's really hard to answer your question other than originally tubed tyres were not necessary on 5.5" sport rims.
