I'm EXTREMELY jealous of that rear AC unit. On hot days when the AC is freezing my hands up front, my kid is still roasting in back on the bench. Wonder if there's any way to retrofit one into my '99. _________________ '99 Eurovan Westfalia Weekender |

Well, anything is possible
I'd bet if you can get all the rear AC parts and the right rear panel out of a GL/GLS it could be done with a little effort.
I've seen a few being parted out on Craigslist |

Little update.
I have my first daughter due in two weeks Which is part of the reason I wanted to get the "Weekender" version of the van done now!
What you won't see on any stock "Weekender" or camper is is the Rear AC and controls! They must have just done it for space and cost savings. This is something I really wanted to keep with 2 dogs and an infant in my van!
If you take out the giant tube that vents the rear AC to the roof this is how the panels line up. The big hole in the lower panel is a giant AC vent!
I'm debating just making a vented lid for it and let it blow from this location or making duct work to route it further forward in the cab panels.
Another shot of the rear AC unit with the curtain in. I really need to track down a replacement light to get ride of the ghetto set up from the previous owner.
I actually kept all of the overhead lights from the GLS and plan on cutting holes in the trim to mount them with LEDs around the vans interior for a stock look but lots more light!
|
Do you still have the rear AC piece from the GLS? Have you considered altering it to fit? That's what I did when I did my last T4 Weekender conversion to retain the stock rear AC. Some time, tape measure and a good heat gun and a zip disc were all that was necessary. I used the stock Weekender rear overhead console and cut in factory GLS vents and used a custom made ductwork behind the panel. |

What stock weekender overhead console?
As mentioned several times, I've though about adding ductwork to get the air up into the upper side trim panels.
Have a few things to do before that part of the project though. |

Did a little strategic window tinting today. I wanted a bit more privacy than the factory tint offered and I wanted to keep it cooler inside for my dogs and soon to be born daughter.
The front windows were clear. Now they are at 30%.
Since you look back through the slider and rear window when driving we only did 20% darker man those.
The rest of the windows that you can't/don't really look through when driving were limo tinted.
Here is a good before and after shot of the side window.

Fabulous job! Makes me want to at least test drive a Eurovan again...the only one I've ever driven had something wrong with the transmission, at the very least.

Hmm......not sure moving it helped
Hmmm.....maybe the front seat?

Yeah, safer for Wolf and baby (in middle), put that head rest in though, better blocks Wolf from flying forward onto baby should he ever be standing at the same moment you slam on your brakes and/or get into a crash.
SafEST is in a cage in the foot wells, since that's not possible, where you have him (them I hope) in the back in a cage, is next best. Followed by back there w/ some sort of *barrier* between the back and front. It could double as a great playpen and safe place to nap for baby when s/he starts to move.
I've also PM'd a friend b/c I can't find the link, there is one tested harness that you could tether to something.
Crash test video as to why you want to restrain pets for travel. It's for *their* safety and yours!

Thanks for the input.
Did I mention that I'm a retired LEO and have taught performance and safe driving for over 20 years.
Bottom line. I'm not caging them and its really not what I created this thread to talk about. |

I really do appreciate safety input.
Being safe is what allows us to do the adventurous things we want to do!
Just not the topic of this thread.
I have a friend that manufactures these for use in Jeeps and SUVs. This is a picture of my pups in my Jeep JK.
Wonder if there would be interest for something like this for the Vanagon/Eurovan?

Well I *love* that, the dogs look sad though!
I was planning on making something like that myself, to keep the junk in the back off my kids heads, if we're hit. Just hadn't figured out how/where to attach it yet. I prefer the cord/fabric ones to the metal ones that can become a projectile in a crash..
I drive through/near/by/with people that do this on a regular basis, never know when one of them are going to mistake your car for a parking spot or empty roadway.

It makes it hard for me to think fun first and safety next...

One of my favorite quotes of all time "Risk, is not knowing what you're doing"
Drives me batty that people in this country spend so much time blaming the tools and so little time gaining more skills and knowledge about the subject matter.
I can say this after writing accident reports and teaching for so long. 99.9% of crashes (I don't believe in "accidents" ) are lack of driver skill and education.
95% of the time they could even be avoided by the other drivers if paying proper attention. |

A little photography humor.......
Just had our first daughter two days ago and was at the park and taking family pictures.
....no.....not VW family pictures......
These....
So first picture......DOH....wrong light settings....but got both dogs, (note the happy Australian Shepard ) but wife and baby are too dark.
...adjust the settings....use a little flash. Got the wife...CRAP...Aussie laid down
Walked around th van, "Whipped out the training commands and MADE the Aussie sit where I wanted "
....not very happy with me is he?
