Hi,

I am putting all my tin on my engine. I bought this part:

It goes bettwen the crank shaft pulley and the block. I need to remove the crank shaft pulley to put the tin.

How exactly do you remove the crank shaft pulley?

From what I understand:

1) I need to remove the fly wheel

2) Then the gland nut

3) Then use an extractor to remove the fly wheel? What is the correct tool?

Dont confuse the front and back...
No need to remove the flywheel and the gland nut...

That piece of tin is placed at the pulley.

1. If the engine is out of the vehicle, you could just use a decent-sized gear puller.

2. Some lever it off with two large screwdrivers.

3. There also is a compact designed for the job puller available.

2. and 3. can usually be done with the engine installed in the VW.

Put one big screwdriver at 3 O'clock and another at 9 and wiggle the two. You should see the pulley slowly coming out. Don't lose the big woodruff key.

I made a simple tool for this job. Easy enough to do with a piece of 5/16" thick (or thicker) bar stock or flat plate. I doctored your picture to show drilling and tapping a center hole and drilling two 5/16" holes as shown.

My center hole is 1/2" with a grade 8 bolt. 2-each 1/4" bolts slide in from behind the pulley and have nuts attached on the outside.

YEs - you can buy them cheap at Harbor Freight, but mine isn't so "cheap" looking (just ugly) It hasn't broken in almost 40 years.
