Referring to the side mirrors and whether or not they should be vertical or horizontal.

Not talking about personal preference but what was the factory original position.

I have seen inconsistent positioning in the VW literature. Owners manuals show vertical positioning for 68-70 then horizontal for 71-up, however...the campmobile 70 booklet (which came with some 71-up buses) shows a vertical position. I have seen the vertical position in other, late bay westphalia literature as well.

So, not a real big deal or anything, I'm just interested in what the stock setting was. Maybe it varied?

I recall from prior discussions that the consensus (at least as close to one as Samba members can get!) was that the drivers side should be vertically oriented and the passenger side horizontally oriented? But I guess the best configuration is what helps you see the best.

Normally I wouldn't care so much, do whatever you want. But because you have a 71 pastel white westy (like me), I'm gonna throw in my two cents. As you noted, the cover of the 1971 owner's manual show mirrors horizontal, but then again one of the interior pages (door functions, I think) shows driver's side mirror vertical.

Here's a blurry photo, but this is the day my '71 Westy came home from the dealer to my family in London. I am the two year old in the stocking cap on Mom's lap.

So stock for me, is side mirrors = Horizontal. Straight from the dealer. YMMV.

Speaking of which, I gotta update that thread with some new photos and more info! Thanks for reminding me!

Horizontal in the winter and vertical in the summer.

It's just your personal choice of whether you want to watch gophers and airplanes or cars in the lanes next to you.

I think some folks dug thru the old literature, and found both from the factory!

Confucious says man who tries to tell others how to put their mirrors is wasting his precious time on earth same as man who tries to teach a pig to fly.

It's like asking what's the "factory original position" of the fresh air
ventilation outlet louvers. Pfft.

ok, so it seems there is no "correct" factory position...its up to us.

personally i like the way they look vertical but they operate better horizontal so that's how i'll roll.

I prefer vertical; it's less likely my kids will bump into it that way in the garage.

A drastically greater side to side view when horizontal. On a one lane road it probably doesn't matter but on a multiple lane road it sure does matter. How many wrecks have you been in? Just kidding. and I'm tired of people bumping my mirrors at car shows also.

None that were a result of mirror placement (or were my fault at all). Ha! Razz

What's different from the stock bus mirror?
I just looked in the classified, and think I'd prefer my "anti dazzle" mirror.
Just curious.

Sounds like what I already have in my bus. M code says it was a factory option. Hrm. I'll have to check the numbers.
