Say I am 'sitting' on the trans and I have a vice grip on the shift rod. First is forward left, pull back and that's second, forward right is third etc.

How do I put it into reverse? I know the shifter spring itself is the lock out, but what's the trick to 'manually' put the trans into reverse? The rod itself can't go up and down (can it?). Confused, just want to visually how it all works! Smile

You're right, the shift lever, spring and stop plate (or various aftermarket methods) are what locks out reverse - all up front at the shift lever.

Back at the transaxle, the "hockey stick" inside the nosecone has three different selectors it can engage. The 3/4 is when it's rotated all the way to one side, the 1/2 is in the middle and the reverse is when it's rotated all the way to the other side. No springs, lockouts or anything like that.

Ok, so how do I put it into reverse then? All the way over to which side? (And that's it, just all the way over, no forward/back?). I'm assuming all the way over to left side?

Remember the shifter is a lever and pivot. If you are pulling the shifter to the left and forward to engage first, the shifter is twisting the selector to the right and back. Sitting on the trans axle, you need to twist to the far right and forward to get reverse.

Going off how the shifter works up front:
If you are facing the nosecone from the rear of the transmission, reverse would be rotated all the way counter-clockwise and pushed outward, which is toward the front of the car.

More:
You pull the shifter backward up front to engage reverse, which means it pulls the shift rod and hockey stick toward the front of the vehicle.

You need to start in neutral so that all 3 selectors are aligned.

Nosecone off and in neutral, see how all 3 are aligned:

Ok, not to get too complicated, but I really am wanting to know more...

There's the 3 selectors as shown in Everett's picture above, is there a place I can look up how they are aligned in all the gears? I tried searching (really!) but nothing like this information shows up anywhere.

if you look at Ev's picture, the bottom one(larger) is reverse, it has two positions; in and out. pulled out it is in reverse, in is neutral position. the other two have three positions; out, neutral, in. inorder to select a gear they all must be in the neutral position except the one you are selecting. so, first gear would be middle selector pushed in. second gear, middle selector pulled out. third gear is top selector pushed in, and fourth is top selector pulled out. before you install the nosecone and hockeystick make sure you have all the selectors in the neutral position.

Ahh, so simple now that I read it!! Thanks!

Transmissions are like a 'black box' to me, I really want to know how they work. I've taken some apart, cleaned them, put them back but I don't really know the magic inside them.

When you grab the selector shaft/hockey stick and rotate it you should be able to feel the tip of the hockey stick as it nudges by the 3 selector shaft heads.

There are interlocks in the gear carrier to prevent catching two gears at once.
However, with the nosecone off you can engage reverse and 3 or 4.

Just take the pattern at the shift knob and simply turn it 180 degrees. That's the pattern at the hockey stick.

So "sitting on the trans" reverse is left and down at the shifter but right and up at the hockey stick, 3rd is right and up at the shifter but left and down at the hockey stick, etc.
