I am trying to identify these hubcaps. They look to be 66/67 hubcaps, but I can't tell if they are aftermarket from the picture.
What do you think? Is there a way to tell aftermarket from original?

Do they have the 2 holes on the edge for the hubcap puller? Given the raised emblem I'd guess Aftermarket.

They do have the two holes on the side. It looks to have a lip which I think makes it 66/67.
The raised emblem is normal for the 66/67. Unfortunately I do not have them with me to compare with a German one for weight and feel. _________________ 1967 L633 VW beetle (currently being restored...slowly)

They are 66/67 hubcaps. Go put them on the kitchen scale, OG VW weigh close to 500gram each. I have a NOS set here. |

Interesting... I never knew that. As a follow up do you know how much the after markets usually weigh? _________________ 1967 L633 VW beetle (currently being restored...slowly)

There should also be three square raised bumps on the inside lip like so:

Well I do not see any raised square bumps on the inside lip. Are these on all original 66/67 hubcaps?

Are you sure they are for a 5 lug? The reason I ask is, that back in the late 80's I had a set of aftermarket 4 lug caps on my super that looked alot like what you have.

those look like they could be type three hubcaps.I'm not sure of the years but some of the type three hubcaps had the center section where the vw logo is raised higher then on bug hubcaps.Maybe they were raised for axial nut clearance? |

I don't see the 3 raised bumps on my NOS set and I need to pull my old set of my 66 to investigate. |

They are not Type 3 caps. 66-67 Type 3s do have a larger raised center but they are 4-lug caps.
Those are 5-lug caps since they have the double lip around the edge to snap into the 66-67 Bug wheel.
They do look strange though.
66-67 Type 3 caps with "big nipple" center:
Double lip style, used on 5-lug 61-65 Type 3 hub caps and 66-67 Bug hub caps:
(But those are not Type 3 5-lug caps) _________________ How to Post Photos

Here is another picture of the hub caps I am trying to identify. So we can agree that they are 66/67 caps used on beetles, right?
I measured the weight and they were right at 453 grams. Maybe off a little bit.

I've noticed that some also have the VW part raised on the cap while others have the VW part not raised.
Stolen from classifieds:

For that style:
Sunken = Type 3
Raised = 66-67 Beetle
If you have some sunken ones that are nice, contact me and I will buy them. |
Amazing the amount of knowledge you gain from thesamba.com! I wish I did but do not have any sunken.
If you have a nice set of original raised I would be interested in those, just contact me. _________________ 1967 L633 VW beetle (currently being restored...slowly)

What's amazing is Ev's knowledge of VW's.
..not to mention his ability to pull engines on the roadside with a scissor jack.

Does anyone have an original and an aftermarket 66/67 hubcap that they can take real good close up photos of to show the community.
Maybe a close up of the VW emblem, the back, the raised square, the pull holes and a overall shot...
Also if anyone has a set of good originals I would be interested in purchasing if the price is right. _________________ 1967 L633 VW beetle (currently being restored...slowly)
