|
|
No so long ago I bought a nice set of 113-255-355A Heater Hoses as I'm running a later model 1500 engine in my Oval Bug so I need hoses that go from the heater boxes 60mm-50mm on the chassis.
However, after around 6 months use the blighters have melted...the quality is shocking. Can anyone recommend anything that will last and work out better value for money whilst still doing and awesome job at keeping my bug warm and toasty when required?
I don't want to fork out for another set of the same for it to happen all over again. |

They were the thick black plastic ones with the wadding in the centre.
The foil ones don't seem to come in the 50mm one end to the 60mm at the other and I thought the foil ones were just for in the engine bay running from the shroud outlets.
Any other ideas? |

Ah, you're talking about the heater bellows between the heaterboxes and the chassis.
Two thoughts; one - don't the ends just screw off? Can you cobble together a pair of oem quality frankenbellows from 50 and 60cm sets? Two, I pretty sure that, for whatever reason, 50/60cm hybrids are comparatively common down here, probably because we kept the early body style for considerably longer than a lot of other places. So preloved, original bellows with 50/60cm outlets can probably be had a lot cheaper if you were willing to pay for some postage...

A VW with heat? You must be on crack! Everyone knows VW's don't have heat! All the heater does is make stink and put oil slicks on the lower corners of the windshield.
Check the classifieds for an OEM set of tubes. They would probably work better.
Then again, maybe this is the reason your oval would have had the flexible steel tubes originally. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Get a set of 40hp fresh air heat exchangers, which will have the small-sized outlets. Now you can (as mentioned above) use the correct metal flex tubes which were designed for your car. Alternatively, you can build or buy used if you can find them, a pair of metal adapters for your existing heat exchangers to reduce from large to small size, again installing the metal flex tubes. As an interim measure, the metal flex tubes can be stuck inside the large sized heat exchanger outlets. Notice the common thread here... metal flex tubes which also look cool when you're under your car tinkering with things. Just think of they joy they will bring you in the years to come! |

Sounds like ideally I need to find the metal flex tubes that go from 60mm-50mm then.
I want to keep my later engine with the bigger heat boxes as unfortunately funds are limited so I must make do.
I wasn't to sure if anyone was producing a more premium set than the plastic shoddy peice of hardward I've recently destroyed within a 6 month period.
- These are what have burnt to a crisp :

Anymore advice or direction to hardware more suitable is greatly appreciated everyone! |

You are kidding! I have been using that type on all of my cars with no issues for years. Assuming that you have a fresh air system with your later engine. I suspect that you have something else going on. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Do you have pics of the melted ones? It might help to figure out what happened to them. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

I don't have pics at the mo I'm afraid fellas...the heat exchangers used are NOS original 16 fin ones and they seem to work damn well...where the opening goes around the exit of the heat exchangerand enters the accordian area the plastic has melted straight through.
There is wadding in the middle so don't know if this would have got so excessively hot and burnt/melted the plastic as it looks chard.
I dunno tbf whats going on plus I don't have a fresh air system. |

Maybe the engine overheated at some point? It would only take one time to do that damage. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

There is no such thing. There are only hard-to-find adapters which look just like those silicone things you found, 50mm tubes and 60mm tubes. |

Like Snort said, VW did make 60 to 50mm reducers at one time.
Here's a set I have.
If you can find an OG set of 50mm to 50mm accordian tubes, you can get adapters like these made. Here's a pic from the bus forums of an adapter a guy said a muffler shop made for him. I can't imagine a muffler shop would charge too much for something like this.

Or start looking at a hardware store for aluminum adapters - in your plunbing and heating section - you may find something close. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

A muffler shop can easily make the adapters. I have also seen a wide range of exhaust tube adapters at my local o'Reilly's autoparts. I've used a set a muffler guy made, and the stock 50mm tubes on my 63 for years. |
