My Brake pressure regulator is leaking badly. Looks like the gasket between the two halves has finally had it. What to do? I searched and searched, no one carries a rebuild kit or replacement part. I could try to dismantle it and make a new gasket, but what about the internal seals etc., I'm sure they need attention after 42 years. _________________ 71 Bay Window

I think the regulator uses o-rings, not gaskets to seal. I suppose you could open it up and try to find
o-rings to match, what've you got to lose? Other than that, it would be time to hit up on the used bus
parts vendors, such as bustedbus.com in Colorado or thebusco.com in Washington. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

Thanks for that link, not sure how you found it. The price is a bit painful, I'll take mine apart first and see what I can see. If it looks like total loss, this looks like it may be the way to go. To bad there isn't a rebuild kit. _________________ 71 Bay Window

Hard to tell from the Haynes diagram how it is sealed. I'll take it apart and look. _________________ 71 Bay Window

When I bought my '72 it had a lot of missing parts the PO had robbed to put on another of his projects. This valve was one of those parts. I couldn't find one either at the time and I didn't even have a core anyway. Eager to get it on the road, I went to the local parts store and picked up a couple of threaded brake unions and plumbed it direct without the valve. I anticipated having braking problems because of this but figured it would work good enough to get other things dialed in then I would address this concern when I could locate the parts. That was about 6 years and 40K miles ago and it has always performed flawlessly witout it. I have driven it on dry roads, wet roads, and icey roads. I have driven it empty, and loaded extremely heavy and it always stops perfectly without ever having a lockup or lack of stopping force. I have had 2 other late bays('77 and a '79) in this time that both had the valve in place and I see no difference in braking performance. I'm not saying this is the best option, but definately better than a brake fluid leak. _________________ "Cross Country Trip" http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5...highlight= |

Well, see, you must not be driving that bus like an ordinary American, i.e. too fast and too close. Thus, you have very little reason to
slam on the brakes, lock up the rears, and go into spin. The regulator's sole purpose was to take away a possible excuse for nitwit drivers
to file a lawsuit against VW. Remember, these busses were made in the Ralph Nader era, and that guy had lots of people convinced that VW was somehow responsible for the crashes that idiot VW drivers got themselves into. In the last 15 years, I think I've had to apply the brakes really hard
maybe 4 or 5 times, briefly. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

you think that is painful, wait till the steering shaft ventilates you when you run off the road.
take it apart to look, but i wouldn't reuse it. perhaps a1 cardone could rebuild it for you. _________________

you can't buy the seal between the two halves.
Maybe this will make it seen less painful (plus shipping which is outrageous from these folks)

If used or reconditioned is my best bet, what is the latest year I can get one from? Are there later/better versions that will work on a 71, how about a Vangon version? How about another make? _________________ 71 Bay Window
