Sometimes on a long cold winter you start to think of what you could build with the parts you have around. I started to look at parts for a supercharged 36hp Challenge motor. In the barn is a 1936 Graham centrifugal supercharger assembly with a bad drive section. This is a 10” compressor made by Graham which copied the Duesenberg superchargers, which is a close copy of the early Miller race car supercharger. It has a water jacket cooling in the compressor housing and in the discharge pipe, which is early intercooling.

How cool that would look on a stroker 36hp VW? I looked at what carb would go with all this early vintage stuff and I just happen to have a pair of very early sand cast Solex carbs that are from either a 356SL Gmund Porsche or a very early 1500cc Carrera 4 cam Porsche.. These are probably very early prototypes of the 40P11 style, very short in height, sand cast, electric pencil written on each carb bowl, and made in Italy. Serial or part number + “40P11”. The venturis are 35mm, with a very unusual solid drilled brass tube for fuel delivery into the venturi.. Weird!

One of these Solex carbs sitting on the aluminum compressor on the 36hp stroker might run well. John would like this setup.

Enclosed are some pictures, and what’s more I have the parts. Just have to figure out how to make it all work.

Isnt that supercharger a turbo charger?

Is this before this style design had become the turbo charger?

very interesting, could you take a pic of the charger next to an engine please. I cant quite scale how big it is.

Very Happy

I love it Tom...you've gotta do it. Very Happy

Keith, that's the classic shape of a centrifugal supercharger.

Paxton have made them since the '30s...still do: http://www.paxtonauto.com/article.php?id=3

Things are going kind of slow on the blown 36 HP. I'm still in Arizona so don't have all my parts here, the case, crank, rods and cylinders are done for the new 1585 cc motor. Still waiting on the cam and haven't figured out all the blower drive yet.

Too bad I missed Tom Simon at Goeff Hart's shop where I have been hanging out along with Ronnie. I've been getting a lot of Dyno testing observations in. More later.

Cool idea, Tom. Here's something that might help with the blower drive:

Hey Tom,
What are the chances you have that Graham intake tube still laying around?
