Hallo all!

I am currently restoring a 1964 vert (built september 1963) and I am trying to find out wether the convertible top frame should be black or painted the same color as the car. Any help on this matter would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

OK, thanks! When was the "break" year, i.e. up to what year are the frames painted same color as the car? Thanks again!

I have no idea... never knew that color matched folding top frames existed on air cooled Beetles.... not too sure they ever did from Karmann.
All the 60's convertibles I've delt with have been black or charcoal, not color matched.
Maybe later years.. in the 70's?? Maybe the special addition ones??

Have you actually seen original color matched folding top frames. ?

In fact, most I have seen are actually beige. However, I have seen some that appear to be color matched, here's an example:

Just trying to get this issue figured out before I get busy with the spray gun Smile

Um... thats not painted by Karmann... That looks like an owner induced attempt at a color match..

Stroll through the gallery, even the unmolested cars are black...

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_cat.php?cat_id=24

BUT!!!.. I do see a few in the 58-60 range with different colors.... Hmmmm
One things for sure... VW ( and Karmann) were great at running changes.. so I could see it being possible..

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=426481

Ill see if I can round up some more input for you... as I dont know with 100% certainty..

Indeed... here's another 1960 with a color matched frame:

And as my 1964 frame is actually beige in color, the plot thickens and it seems like this is a puzzle requiring some professional input Smile Thanks for all feedback!

Yep, here's an unrestored 1958 a friend of mine had his hands on at one point... beige frame, as you can see:

I have also found another handful of images with color matched frames; also cars that look untouched. I'll post them later. This is interesting Very Happy

Besides the top frame, early cars also had color matched fuel tanks and bumper brackets too

Here's ultimate proof with a picture from the Karmann factory from a late 50s vert

Mine is a 60 (pictured twice above.. Very Happy ) and also came with the body colored frame (red now green). Don't know when Karmann changed to all black though.

Hey MDKG, I hope I didn't offend you by linking to your pictures? If so, I apologize! Very interesting picture... And since this is from the assembly line... That should seal the deal Smile So would the answer to my initial question be:

"Yes, vert frames were always color matched up until X/X 196X" or should it be

"Vert frames could be color matched up until X/X 196X, but they could also be black"?

This sure is interesting Smile Thanks for your input!

No problem at all about the pictures. I post them to be looked at and used for reference.

The answer to your question is hard to tell perhaps some of the German Samba members with contacts at the Karmann factory can tell for sure? My guess would be it could be both depending on the customers wishes.

I have recently started a very late 61 vert project ( July 61 ), It has the 62 tail lights and a gas gage . the color is L380 turquoise. The car had alot of the orginal paint and the top metal does not appear to have ever been repainted. My top is also the body color, L380.
