There you go! I'm sure it'll be fun. If I can get this thing on schedule I said I'd love to join, even just to hang out and ride with someone. I'm doing a full bed liner paint job so trees won't be an issue haha |

Got a call from Bostig...time to rebuild the transmission. I'd be really upset but all this work was in the plan, just not all at once. Never thought the van would be this much of a project

Not sure what you're talking about- you mean Bostig? Right now the plan is to get it out to Daryl at AA tomorrow and hopefully the ring & pinion and important stuff can be used, he said he had cases |

Too funny... I just moved from Oak Square last September. I definitely miss the driveway space I had there (and easy access to the pike). I could fit up to 5 cars if necessary. I'll bet there are some good spaces to be had in the Allston/Brighton area. Keep an eye out if you're up for it. Brighton would be a good spot for many since its easily accessible from just about every direction.
I should probably start a thread an see how many Boston vanagons there are and how many might be interested. |
I think it more amusing to see how many put their time in living in Oak Square! 555 Washington for a few years. Bracket Street too. Vanagon always had preferential parking, even back in 1990.
Bobby at Swan's still laughs at my need for a Vanagon after all these years. _________________ Its a mistress; an expensive, whiney, needy bitch of a mistress. Ironically, I was in Oak square on Brackett St myself for a few months. Always was pleased with seeing all the Vans around |

Cost/time estimate for AA was what I was looking for. Sorry for the lack of details there!
Just want to make a mental note for when that time comes for me. _________________ 87 Syncro

Ohhh, haha. I haven't got the total yet, all I know is probably $150 shipping each way and at least the rebuild cost on the website, I think it's $1800 or so? I'll absolutely loose some (if not all, but finger's crossed) of the core deposit as the case is gone too. I'm not doing locker or anything right now because it's not in the budget, but I do want to ad the locking TBD later on. |

Ok, so the past week has been a mess of sourcing impossible-to-find stuff.
Successfully found a universal U joint that didn't cost $350. Then did a whole bunch of research and found power steering lines. The last piece is the passenger side radius arm, because the PO did a really sketchy weld job on what looks like a previously-broken arm that's on there now. InSyncro is hooking it up on that one, and Daryl's really helping me with the front trans mounts and transmission.
Now it's just waiting for all the parts to come in and put them all together. Then hopefully the van will at least be driving. Might not be able to stop very well yet, but that's the next step.
Can't thank everyone on this forum enough for all the help- don't know where I'd be without you! |

Thanks! A gent named David in Woburn, MA did the work, couldn't ask for a better dude to work with. He really killed it, it's all really top notch and way more stock looking than I requested.
That garage is killer Once the work that I can't do is done, I'll be building out the rest and painting it in my rental apartment's driveway. I'm only like 3 miles out of downtown Boston, so my neighbors have been watching and commenting as the work gets done. They think it's pretty awesome/hilarious to see a full resto happening in our neighborhood. |
Hi Eric, can you please provide details for David in Woburn. I've got to have repairs made to the front attachment points for the radius arms. Should be fairly straightforward to weld in small patches. Wasn't to cleaer from your post, does he know vanagons?
Thanks,
josh |

Updates!
Transmission was rebuilt by Daryl, and is now on it's way back to get installed with the Bostig gents. I had Daryl add a rear locker and decoupler, and will probably add a front locker when the front diff is rebuilt down the road.
Other than that it's been pretty quiet. Mr. InSyncro will be getting the van once the Bostig gents are done with it to finish up the underside, rebuilding the suspension, brakes and cooling system. Then I get it to do the paint/interior buildout.
Oh, and these. Couldn't pass em up, 16x7et23 with center caps (though I'm using t3 center caps)
Problem is I've now got a set of those, a set of 5 clk.'s, and the stock alloys. The other two sets need to go I think |

Bostig is complete and the van moves under it's own power once again! The van shipped over to mr. InSyncro himself yesterday to build suspension/cooling system/etc and undercoat (lots of work). I believe he'll be posting to this thread as he has updates, things should really start to pick up now!
I do have a goal date in mind. I've been invited to the Magic tradeshow in Las Vegas to park the van on the tradeshow floor and work out of the (yet to be built) workshop that I'll be building in the back when the mechanical stuff that I don't know how to do is done. I've got to leave to drive from Boston to Vegas around August 14th...so it's going to be close! |

Yes Sir,
The van arrived today.
We will have this 89 Syncro's driveline and suspension addressed shortly and do a complete chassis/undercarriage protective coating once aligned.
Brady from Bostig was a huge help today on a phone consult to bring me up to speed with the conversion.
This will actually be my first chance to spend some time working around the Bostig conversion.
Stay tuned.

Dylan its intricacies are obvious especially having a strong mechanical
background like yourself. Bostig does have a user manual online
that can be downloaded. Some of the components like the cooling
arrangement for the filler have changed a bit but for the most part
its up to date. It might even be worth emailing Nate and request
a copy of their latest soft cover guide.
If you make it to Litchfield I"ll toss you the keys to my van so
you can give a turbo Zetec a drive. _________________ Bill M

May 29:
Hotsy steam pressure washing of the chassis and suspension parts before disassembly.
Once the van is on the hoist, better pictures will be posted.

An order for the remaining needed parts will be made today and I should have them by the middle of next week.
After looking over every inch of this van, I can say that it really is not as bad as I first envisioned.
The fabrication work done already is very strong and tight.
It is truly amazing how well the steam stripes the underbody gunk and grime.
I set the machine for maximum temperature, but keep the pressure down so it will not lift the factory brushed on sealers.
An environmentally safe degreaser from Wurth was applied and let sit for 20 minutes before the steam bath.
A little residue is seen on the body, but it wipes right off. |

Dylan, I love that lift! We're building a new garage and looking to put in a lift and just found out about these type, but hadn't seen any in use by vanagons.
Happy with it? I imagine it can't go very high, but easily lifts all 4 wheels right?
We wanted to put in a 2 post, but somewhat hate the posts, and don't have enough headroom to really stand under a car anyway, so don't need it. |
We have a few of these scissor lifts around, I like working while sitting on my adjustable stool on wheels.
Trans and Syncro fuel tank work can be done with this lift, but you have to offset the van on it....not always ideal will the heavier vans.
Having this and a twin post works well for swaps. |
