You're right on with this. I am actually in the market for my first bus and at first was thinking that my 20K was not going to be enough until I got some advice from a bunch of Samba peeps telling me these prices are BS and I should be good with that budget.
That said I still find myself wondering what the real market value is. It would be nice if there was visibility to what the sold buses are actually going for vs just seeing them listed for $25K looking like a heap and then just seeing the pending sign not knowing if they actually got the 25K or not. |
Ive been shopping the classifieds for a few days with your $20k and have done pretty good. If I was you, Id be looking at buses in the $25-$30k range. Find a bus you love and show up with hundred dollar bills. Thats how you get a deal done. I do think theres a lot of fishing in the classifieds, but there are some sweet buses too...decide what model you want, then wait for it (be realistic!); and make it known here what youre looking for, a lot of these guys have buses not listed, but might sell to the right person. Good luck! |

The multiple misspellings of the word VolkswagOn irritates the hell out of me. Other typos and spelling issues don't, just the brand name. I agree with the image created by misspellings, especially of Volkswagen, but I must confess it helped me tremendously.
When I was looking for a late model 13 window deluxe, I was having the usual difficulty as any current buyer--lots of over priced marginal buses. I used all the usual internet sites, including CL. One day, out of sheer frustration, I simply typed in "1967 bus" into the search field of CL. Low and behold, the first hit that popped up was from an advertiser that had misspelled Volkswagen (he spelled it with an O also) but it showed up on my search because the word "bus" was not preceded by any modifier. The ad was already two months old by this time and the price was very low for the model and condition so I expected it to be gone--but I called anyway.
Bus was unsold and he commented to me that he hadn't gotten any replies from his ad in two months. After a short discussion in which I decided to buy it, I told him why no one had responded--this misspelling had kept it out of any searches that used proper spellings or any that used just "VW" as a modifier. He laughed, I got the bus at a great price (IMO) and I've always felt, "it was meant to be my bus." |

Here's my trick... This is a Craigslist super search that I have crafted. You see, you can add modifiers to say "OR" and you can exclude certain words like "jetta" etc... So here's the page I hit:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/search/?areaID=7&...catAbb=sss
No you can change 'losangeles' to whatever area you are, like if you're in the san francisco bay it's 'sfbay.craigslist.org/'
This query pulls in all VW/ Volkswagen stuff
UPDATE: this one adds volkswagon

Lose the apostrophe, unless you are talking about something that belongs to the typos. For example, the typo's offensively excessive CAPITALIZATION. |

I love it. You can almost hear this guy getting upset that no one is buying this heap. If you bundle junk in with junk, my math comes out junk. Even if you express how badly the junk needs to be gotten rid of and spread all the loose junk out nice and pretty, it's still junk. _________________ 53 Hatch Barndoor

If you need a forklift to load a bus because there is no engine or tranny, and it's a panel, what you have there is a storage shed. Which would be nice if the driver's side wasn't crashed so bad the doors won't open. I read the story and all on the find and that's cool, but those panels are still just panels. No seats, motor or tranny. 12 hundred max. And you need your own forklift when you get it home. I could use a storge shed though. _________________ 53 Hatch Barndoor

True. I guess If it were me I would use some parts off the other buses and make it a roller. _________________ 53 Hatch Barndoor

None of the them had tranys, the dune buggy guys bought those up many years ago. Finding 8 bus tranys for rollers in my area is not easy. If I had tranys in them they would probably be sold already.
All the cargo doors open fine. The drivers side was swiped at one time but luckly did not damage the hinges. I'll post pics of the doors opened up later today or tomorrow. _________________ For lastest finds check out

Selling a non-roller bus, especially without a title, is not so easy. Generally people want the deep discount, or basically they just can't be bothered. There are the logistics in getting it home to sort out.
reminds me of this bus:
Look at that front floor!
It was for sale w/o a tranny for I think 6 months... for something like $1200. This was in 2006. I didn't want to cut it up, but was getting pretty tempted to take that nose for the Montana '56 westy.
Eventually I got a tranny to it, the bus sold not too long after, was put on a truck to Georgia, and was put back on the road:
