Hey Bliss- Here is the fuel pump bracket that I made, it replaces the frame head cover.
After I cast it
cleaned it up and drilled and tapped

Wow, that's really nice! I'm sure I could weld something up similar and mount it in the same location you did. _________________ 1970 Sundial Camper

Yes you could, but Nick was trying to recycle his beer cans and busted lawn furniture. You know, clean up the junk that was laying around.
I personally like the part Nick casted, and it shows real thinking outside the box, to make the stuff to do sand casting. That's dedication. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Well, it's alive! I found a video on youtube showing how to troubleshoot a no spark condition on a Subaru engine, followed the steps and narrowed it down to 2 signal wires coming from the computer to the igniter. I guess back when the ground cable came off, the two pins (in the ECU) to those wires were burned out. luckily there are 4 pins and my engine only needs two. So it was a matter of switching the wires from the 1 and 2 pins to the 3 and 4 pins, then hooking up the laptop and programming the thing to use the new pins. I let Lance at Outfront handle that, of course.
Whatever, the thing runs great! It's pretty damn fast too. The only problem now is the PO put a gutted out motorcycle muffler on the car and it sounds absolutely horrible. Imagine running straight pipe with an amplifier. So next stop will be a muffler shop.
By the way, I drove it home 1 1/2 hours in rush hour, L.A. traffic. The car drove well and the cooling system worked flawlessly. Never even hit 200 degrees. _________________ 1970 Sundial Camper

Thank you jefftrish. It was definitely a gamble, but I'm feeling pretty good about that trade right about now! _________________ 1970 Sundial Camper

When you say it's pretty fast to, what do you mean?
It look's like a little work, and some detailing and you will have a very cool reliable Vdub.

Well, it's got 190 hp, so it's got more power than any vw I've ever had, by far. Yeah, some detail and interior and I'll be pretty happy with it. _________________ 1970 Sundial Camper

I have a 69 fastback with a 1760 old school stroker, ported heads, 1 1/2 Merged header, and a set of Kads. I' guessing 90 to 110 max. Its a lot of fun I can't imagine 190 hp. Must be a blast. I bet there will be a few surprised cars, at the stop lights.
Regards,
Jeff |

AWESOME! I'm glad it was something simple, now get busy cleaning up the install! |
Agreed to both. Looks like it'll be a fun project. But the install definitely needs some clean up work. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Good job on the start up. Yup the boys at Outfront know the Subaru stuff real well and will help you till the end. If it wasn't for them I would never known anything about this great conversion. Reliable 200+ HP's is great fun in a VW too. As for the trans, it will be ok but just don't be doing drag race type burn outs with drag radials.
ENJOY THE RIDE! |

Thanks for all the encouragement guys. My bus will be down for another couple of weeks, so I actually need to drive this fastback a little while I work on cleaning things up. As far as long term, I may actually swap this Subie over to my bus and convert the fastback to regular old type 3 power again. If so, it won't be til next year though. _________________ 1970 Sundial Camper

Once I went to Subaru swaps I never looked back. Vanagons, buggies, Thing, type 3's, type 2's. Who ever rode and drove them become involved too. May it be hard core vintage guys to hard core full race VW engine guys. It's the best of both worlds. Glad you got to see the light that we did.
Enjoy! |

The DOHC 2.5l is only 165hp, not 190. They also have a pretty poor headgasket reputation. The bad headgaskets often lead to bad rod bearings because people will run the engines until they stop from massive overheating when the headgaskets go. The engine will fire back up after it cools off and a shop replaces just the headgaskets, sending a hurt engine back out to blow the rest of the way up shortly after.
They are a good engine, they just have a bad reputation due to the headgaskets. Replace them preemptively with the updated ones from Subaru and it will be a great engine for you. |
