Are 36hp crank rods symmetrical? Obviously the rod numbers match up, but do you simply install them with notches faced down? Or does it matter?

they don't have an offset. they can go on any old way.i install them tang down out of habit. torque to 36 ft. pounds . they take more torque than 1600 rods.
