In the great salt belt of east america, i am becoming pissed off.
I just waited 6 months of crap weather to get my pristine syncro back on the road, and it's been 6 months of anger and a $320 bus!
While I have grown to appreciate the beater bus, and am now even considering keeping it and thrashing a few more winters at it, thoroughly testing preventative and preservative products. I was going to sell it, but now that i've got all the late model features working, I'm somewhat hooked...
Anyway, I'm thinking about some plastic fender liners. Theres a very good reason these exist on ALL modern cars. They collect and reroute salt/road crap before it touches metal. But, they also have to be incapable of trapping this crap between their back sides and the metal.
So has anyone modified any from a known vehicle to work?
You guys will be seeing a bunch of summer time winter prep projects on this crap bus from me!
I really hate salt. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=559766&highlight=winter+rust

I hate salt too. we have started salting the roads here...too many people have moved in from other places and piss and moan at all the precious money they loose on 2-3 snow days.
anyway...the Bus Depot sells plastic fender liners for our vehicles, but I haven't seen a set mounted and I'd like to see just how well they fit before I spend my money.
I was also wondering if TerraWagen will be looking into making them... |

Bus Depot sells some. I have 2 sets, and on both sets the Right Rear liner fit is horrible, so bad it's unusable. The other 3 are fine. _________________ It's just advice, do whatever you want with it!

I have 2 sets, and am happy with the Left Rear, Left Front, and Right Front. The Right Rear sucks, I have 2 of them sitting on a shelf collecting dust. I tried to fit them on 3 different vanagons, so it's not the car it's the liner. Maybe a bad run? IDK. _________________ It's just advice, do whatever you want with it!

I imported liners years ago.
They all fit great.
Work well too. |

I back up John's experience with the right rear liner. All three of the others fit great, but that right rear just doesn't. I gave up trying to fit it and I'm only running the other three. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

I vote to have TerraWagen add these to the list, make sweet fitting molds and bang out a few runs |

I have them, and the right-rear was a challenge but I got it to fit. It took a bit of trimming, but it fits snugly now.

Is there a difference in road noise when you get these in? _________________ 'Lucky' our 1987 Red Westy, ASV 1.9 TDI ~130HP, Peloquin differential (had a GW 2.3 that we loved, but it died, we drove it hard!)

Yes, but not dramatic. They do keep the wheel bays much cleaner.
