Removing RGBs is automatic 3-1/2" drop. You should sell your trans and RGBs drum to drum and go get yourself a beetle trans and straight axle kit if that's what you're after. Your trans turns the wrong direction for removal of the RGBs--you'd have to pull it apart, flip the diff, reset the backlash using tools you don't have etc.
Go to the lowering thread and follow along until you get it.
You don't need to lower the bus to get different highway gear ratios. What is your first priority--lower ride height or lower freeway RPMs? |

Both are priority. Just on budget doing it. |

Okay, well since you want to talk about lowering, there is already a mega-thread for it where the rest of your questions belong.

From there, you should be able to cost out your project. Just understand that you will be money ahead selling what you have as a complete assembly and starting with a late 60s beetle or type 3 trans and using varying mixes of parts to get the final gear ratio and brakes you want/can afford. It's also easier to do it that way unless you own the specialized tools necessary to set the tolerances when reassembling your differential in the other side of your trans case.
Good luck with your project! |
