Did you check the head for warping before the rebuild? Did you retorque the heads after couple of thousand miles? Why was the engine rebuilt?

no but they were GW heads and no but i will this time. dont they all need a rebuild sooner or later, just wanted a fresh motor. Question retorque, from what i have read, do it right the first time and it will be leak free for a long long time, but 12k give me a break.

Subaru coolant conditioner and drive it Exclamation
Its a waterboxer.

I do not recommend re torquing heads after the sealants have cured.

Don't see any gasket sealer on the head or seal. What sealer did you use?

I have not seen a gasket do that before! Was there any indication of combustion gasses in the coolant?

When you take it apart look at the metal sealing gasket for a leak.

crappy product? nick? imperfection? maybe wrong stud tightening technique?

I dunno, brother. Probably could have been a bunch of other things. Nothing to do except take it off again. Maybe it will be readily apparent once you take it off.

Back in the day, 12k failures on factory engines or "factory" rebuilds weren't uncommon.

Noticed you did not use sealant at the rubber channels, can you show a photo of the top of the block where the rubber seal split occurs ? Suggest you use " The Right Stuff " next time and put it in the rubber channel as well.
