What PPG/Glasurit/Sikkens/whatever real-auto-paint colors/codes do I use to match original for the following items on a 1976 Westy?:
* Metal top of dash - this is NOT black but a real dark grey. Have seen "LD43" and "L43" codes mentioned here but these numbers lead me nowhere.
* Wheels - they are silver, but what auto paint matches original?
* Propane Tank
* Bumpers - what is correct for late bus?
Please, no spray can stuff. |

Yes and all I keep coming up with is body paint color codes. Don't see how that is supposed to tell me what colors these items were painted.
The Ratwell engine article showed the paint on the engine intake runners as L249 Dove Grey, but I don't know if that is the grey color used on the Propane Tank or not.
So, still no closer to knowing anything. |

Thanks for steering me away from the Dove Grey, Dan. So it takes a custom match for the tank color. OK, well at least I know what I'm up against for that item.
I just know there's someone out there that's repainted their late bay dash, wheels, and/or bumpers with original color automotive paint. What did you use? |

My dash is still stock original and has never needed a repaint. My bumpers were recently repainted. I took one in for a color match as well (the inside of the bumper was still original), but I also told them the code, which is L90D for a late Bay. I used Urethane Enamel for the original finish and paint quality. See page 9 of my Visual Documentary thread for more info. The original bumper paint is quite yellow, and not stark white as many assume. Good luck Jon.

If it helps, the first post on this page has some more info. I know he also lists the L codes, but the dash top matches the shifter, pedals, and some other things. Those might be enough to track down a perfect color:

EDIT: Found the page I was really looking for; put in your Ld whatever codes here, and get mixtures:

Thank you Westfabulous for the bumper color code.
Thank you asiab3 for the link to the Glasurit website where I was finally able to locate L43 Grey Black, and the link to the useful dash topic.
So far, here's what I've got:
* Metal top of dash - L43 Grey Black
* Wheels - L091 CHROMFARBE (VW #107464/LLS091 CHROME 080309)??
L91?? L90D?? L95X silver ??
* Propane Tank - no code available, need to match to my original
* Bumpers - L90D Pastel White
Is the L091 wheel paint the right one? Anyone had it mixed up from any of the major paint distributors? |

Sorry to have to bump this up, but I need to get a handle on the paint for the wheels. Can anyone confirm if the L91 paint is the right one for 76-79 wheels?
The Glasurit website shows only water-based and base/clear formulas for this code (and I don't even know if its the right one!). I'd like to stick with single stage if I can. If someone here has matched their original silver wheels in another paint manufacturer's formula, I'd love to hear about it - PPG Anyone? |

Hi Jon,
As requested, I took some photos for you of my original dash panel. It has never been altered from original. You will see that it appears to be black (first photo), but when you illuminate the paint, it becomes evident that the color is a dark, dark grey. I posted here as a reference for anyone else who might want to reference this thread:
