New to this forum ( but have been with the bus forum for quite a while) Just purchased a 1970 vert, that has essentially sat for 5 years...very little driving) Initially, she would not idle, would die when driven and foot off the gas) Cleaned the Pilot jet..was clogged with junk, replaced the fuel filter, had some sediment. Starts right up, and idles fine...but too high. Dwell is at 42 degrees, and idles at 1000. She still has a little hesitation on acceleration, and has a modest stumble/ backfire until warms up on accel. Have turned the bypass screw 2 full turns in either direction, and no change in idle speed. Engine is factory replacement (new) built in Mexico with Bocar 34 PICT 3 carb. Any ideas? Have added new gas, and no more sediment in fuel filter. Any advice would be appreciated. I have the Bentley.....Thanks, Bob _________________ 1963 Convertible (Lizzie) and 1964 Convertible (Patience) 1976 Westfalia (Winnie) |

Rev, thanks for the site....BTW...I tightened the manifold bolts under the carb, and clamps on the intake rail gaskets...no change...but then turned the bypass screw counter clockwise 5 1/2 turns, and she went down to 900 rpm...and now only has a slight hesitation on accel...and no more backfire. My guess is that the PO was trying to get it to idle while the pilot was semi-clogged. Will now go through the other adjustments on the carb according to the site you sent me...just don't want to have to take the carb off and disassemble...Thanks again, Bob PS...I am in Mesa.... _________________ 1963 Convertible (Lizzie) and 1964 Convertible (Patience) 1976 Westfalia (Winnie) |

Is it a dual plane motor? Maybe theres a leaky intake boots or a vac. leak somewhere. |

When a car has been sitting or barely used for that long, it's wise to simply go through the carb ... thoroughly. It's really no big deal.
Take off the carb and blow out all orifices with Berryman's Spray Carb Cleaner. WEAR eye protection!!! Then blow it out with compressed air--with eye protection, for sure. This is the non-soaking way, and it works.
If you need help with taking the carb off or on, or taking stuff off the carb and putting in the new rebuild parts, gaskets, "O' rings, etc., just ask on here.
