In writing this book on the inner workings of air-cooled VWs, I discovered some interesting discrepancies between the engine's horsepower/torque, the gear ratios, and the recommended shift points.

The "preamble" is here:

Your 1500 1600 shift points:

If you see technical errors, please PM me.

Reminds me of the time I test drove a Subaru, which had a red line of 6500 RPM. I wound each shift to about 4500 RPM, and the owner literally threatened to kill me if I didn't stop trying to destroy his car. Most people short-shift their cars massively, being used to automatics.

This entry is way complicated, and I can't follow the color code. Just convince people to hold each gear to at least 3000 RPM, and you'll be doing their engines, and the world, a big favor.

All these pixel transports have fuzzed the images, but no, I am not going to edit twelve pages to one blanket "just rev it to at least 3,000, and yer gud."

Color Code:

Green - good

Red - not good

Pink Stripe - sweet spot

Red Stripe - grenaded connecting rods embedding in the tarboards

Sorry, I'm not buying these shift points. They are too high. I go by my ears and the marked shift points.

For my Bug, I shift [1-2] 15mph. Then [2-3] 25mph. Then [3-4] 40-45mph. I generally limit my cruise speed to a max of 60 mph.

those shift points are pretty much to maximum RPM.

If i wanted to shred an engine in a short time, I'd use your chart.

Zeen - my threat would be similar.

I have used around these shift points for just over 10 years now and things are still going strong. I get my 71' up to 80 a few times a week and up to 90 a few times a month. I have done a little work to the engine, but its mostly stock.
