Does anyone have a screen grab of what their TPS (or MAP) vs RPM looks like for their timing? I think mines backwards....but working. I'd like to get it better. I'm not looking to copy and paste someones results (theyre all different) but more of what the trend is and what these should look like. |

Increasing RPM=higher numbers at atmospheric pressure
Pressures above atmo (boost)= less timing
Pressures below atmo= more timing (benefits only if you also lean out the mixture)
It's not hard really, just wrap your head around it. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

I have a decent one floating around somewhere on the forums, no idea where anymore. Search my posts and i'm sure you'll find it. _________________ Eric Allred

This is what got me thinking. Mine increases with RPM and as TPS increases (vacuum decrease on this chart). According to this chart timing decreases with TPS position. This makes sense since you ping on hills when your RPMs drop and your throttle opens. |

Here's a few I've previously used:

Excellent, thats what I suspected...mine are reversed. Thanks, I really wanted to see the trend on how these laid out. |

That's one jacked up map.
Also, I see MAP not TPS for load sensing.
Easiest way of understanding this is pick a starting point. I always choose the 100kpa line, which is WOT. Start at the topmost cell, look down the chart. You should see increasing timing up to about 32* at 2800 RPM, since this is essentially your 'mechanical advance' line.
The rest your engine will tell you, take many datalogs. Drive around at cruise with light throttle, remember where in the map this occurs. You can add more timing there for 'vacuum advance', which in your case will likely be anything below 100 kpa in the middle of the rev range. Make sure timing changes are progressive, don't just go from 32* to 48* in one cell. A smooth transition at all points is what you want to see, but it takes some time.
Idle is self explanatory, but the lowest RPM and MAP cell will be cranking. I usually set this one lower than the warm idle value, because it makes cranking a lot easier on the starter motor. That gives cold start attempts the best chance of success, and also keeps the engine from kicking back on hot restarts. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

Thats not actually my map, its just an example illustrating BASICALLY what I should be shooting for. Right now...I think my MAP/TPS goes higher at WOT than at mostly closed. I'm not getting any detectable detonation except on hill climbs in 4th...so I just need to move things around a little bit. |

I just saw the scale is missing. The TPS is across the top 0-100 and the RPMs are on the left 0-5000
Original Map:
New map tonight:
Any thoughts? |

Looks decent, but you should be able to add something like 10* in the middle of the map. Have a look at it when you're cruising around at about 55mph, that's where you can add timing. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747
