I have a bugpack trigger shifter(the hurst copy, now made by empi) in my bug and it doesnt like shifting down into 2nd, whether from 3rd to 2nd or 4th to 2nd, 9 times out of 10 it ends up in 4th.

I have a new shift bushing fitted so is it just a case of moving the mounting plate around? although I have tried sideways adjustment and it makes no difference.

Are the rivets that hold the nylon bushings around the pivot ball of the shifter handle still tight, not allowing the nylon pieces to move when shifting? If they're still tight then I'd keep playing with moving/adjusting the shifter but I've never had much trouble getting ANY VW shifter adjusted to get all of the gears.

The rivets fell apart on my Bugpack shifter years ago. I replaced them with bolts and nylock nuts worked great after that. I was having the same issues before mine completely failed in traffic. Crying or Very sad

I'm using nylon bushings from Empi trigger shifter to repair Hurst copper shifter. Drilled out rivets that retain nylon bushings from Empi shifter and rivets were very soft and easy to drill out from bottom. The Hurst copper rivets were a little tougher to drill out, they'd actually catch and spin. The top nylon bushing from the Hurst is thin and it was cracked in 3 spots but the Empi bushing is thicker.

Can you buy the repair parts for the Bugpack shifters or do you have to buy a complete shifter and cannibalize the parts? I've got a tall copper Hurst shifter that could use some work.

Add one of these while you have it apart.

On my empi shifter was not possible to get 1st and 2nd reliably if it was set so 3rd and 4th worked.
In the end I welded a plate that overlapped about 1/16 inch on the left side of the rectangular aperture guiding 3rd and 4th. This was because the sides of the aperture had worn after 60000 plus miles.
Also the reverse blocker plate fell off on the right hand side of the shifter and was replaced with a piece welded on.

The worn shifter cost me a recon gearbox as it was always crunching gear changes.

I made an aluminum brace like the one Bruce has and reassembled copper Hurst shifter with top thicker Empi nylon bushing and 5mm screws w/nylock nuts. What a pain in the a**.... Had to use new taller aftermarket plastic boot, Hurst plastic boot is about 1/4" shorter. Now I know what Muffler Mike liked about this shifter. Shifts very smooth and precise and I find the ball handle more comfortable than T handle. By the way, I'm using Bugpack red shift coupler at trans.

Came across this in a search for a copper Hurst shifter.
Turns out the bug I'm working on has a copper shifter in it and all along I thought the chrome had all peeled away.
My question is how do I clean the copper after all these years without harming the finish? Thanks in advance.

Autosol or MetAll polish on a soft cloth will have it shiney like a new penny in no time!
