I bought an EMPI bench mounted Engine stand to attempt my first Rebuild on a spare engine I picked up for my '67 T1.
Once I finally got around to getting started I found out the mounting holes don't line up with the engine studs. The stand is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch to wide.
My first thought was "manufacturer defect" so I contacted EMPI directly and was told that the mounts from a 1200,1300, 1500, 1600, and others are not all the same bolt pattern and therefore won't always mount to each tranny.
Now what I'm worried about is if the guy at EMPI was just trying to cover his ass for a defective product, or am I running the risk of building a motor that isn't going to bolt up to my '67 transaxle?
I was told that the motor I'm building is a 1776cc with a Full Circle Crank (although the numbers indicate its a 1600) and the motor currently in my bug is the original 1500cc.
My plan is to build the 1776 and put it in the '67, then build another motor I have for my wifes '74, then rebuild the original 1500 to stock and keep it as a spare in case something ever goes wrong with the other cars. Plus I want to keep it shelved somewhere safe rather than destroy a motor with matching numbers.
Should I change my plans? I don't want to make any major or permanent changes to the '67 since it is still in such good, original condition. Or was this guy at EMPI just full of it?

Yeah, I knew that. 
So the only thing that holds the block is a single bolt through one of the top bolt holes and the bottom just sits over the stud in the block right?
Like this:

Any input on different bolt patterns for different size engines? |

Get a 1" nipple from the hardware store and use a 17mm nut.

IMHO Empi guy was full of it.
The engine/trans bolt/stud mounting pattern is the same for all 36hp through 1600 fuel injected engines and transmissions, 1938 until ~2006, including Porsche 356/912, and 411/412/Type IV elephant engines as well (not that I would use one of those weak stands for one!  ).

The empi mount is a Chinese built piece of shit. It will work, but you will likely have to massage it into place.

Easy to do since it's cheap metal and bends easily.
Tools are an investment, get the VW Alley mount and it will last a lifetime.

Am I correct to assume that simply removing the pin on the stand allows the VW mount to slide right in with no modification needed? This would certainly solve my problem of what to mount the mount to, since there is a HF store relatively close to me. |

Yes... it slides into the HF stand.
Total cost for both and shipping was around $90.
