|
|
I've just installed thing trailing arms and spindles into a stock type 1 beam on my manx buggy this weekend. When I tried to put the bug drums on, it seems as though the inside wheel bearing is too small. Are the thing spindles thicker than type 1 in that area? Different bearing? _________________ 1967 beetle

the bearings are likely a different size- the Thing part number is 311 405 625 which is the same as later beetle, but if you're installing early drums, then the bearing is different, 111 405 627, which is why it doesn't fit. _________________ OG JHC

bljones has the part numbers right. I think if the # starts with 181 that makes it thing specific.
I've been rebuilding my front beam and found a bunch of bug parts in it. what a mess. _________________ Cool runnins,

Thanks guys! The drums are 66 or 67 Type 1 I presume. They both fit on the bug spindles with no problems. The odd thing is that one drum (with original bearings) fits on the thing spindles and one won't (on either side). Think I'll go get some new bearings tomorrow. Thanks again, Chris _________________ 1967 beetle

FYI for future reference the front bearings on the Thing are late model Type one ( four lug bolt). They are also common to all of the rear wheel trailer bearings on front wheel drive water pumper VWs such as rabbit etc. It makes them a very cheap part if bought as Timken or other quality bearing at NAPA or other quality FLAPS. If you have the dimensions of the bearings, you can get them for a way lower price. I am a German parts nut so I only run FAG bearings. But these days you have to be careful as there are parts coming from weird sources. I have a big box filled with good used front bearings that I use in my off road parts bag survival kits. Any time I am doing a new set up I always buy new bearings. Bearing are way cheaper than drums, rotors or spindles. Words to live by.. K-mann |
