Doing bodywork I've seen quite a few doobers in all sorts of places in all sorts of cars.
It looks like just the right shape for a rifle case to fit in too. Make that door a shooting bench with folding legs and you're in there like swimwear.
I like to have as much stuff stowed away and from underfoot as possible. I'm a little hesitant to cut it out but mines an 84 so I shouldn't worry too much about chopping it up.
Looks like a great place for wheel chocks and tools. It's close to outside so you don't drop dirty stuff on your good stuff as much as you might in other places it looks like. _________________ 1984 Vanagon Westfalia 1.9 wbx

That looks awesome.
You are a brave man, cutting into the pristine floor of your Westy like that. But seeing what you did makes me want to at some point redo my under-the-van tray with something like this. _________________ 1989 Westy AT, 2.2 GoWesty.

I feel lust in my heart looking at that space, but when I've poured 5 gallon jugs of water into my tank at tiendas de agua purificada en mexico and missed some the water travels across the floor and out the door, through the upper corrugations I presume. Any thought to that? I know, don't miss, but the first pour usually doesn't all hit the hole. |

to add some thought to this.
I've thought of elevating the whole floor to the height of the walk thru between the seats.
I don't think I'd notice the shorter rear seat (usually anone back ther ehas short legs or 4 of em)
but the whole floor made into a ~3" divided cavity would be handy for the extension cords, flip flops, tool roll, jump cables etc..
and add some depth to this floor chest design as well.
food for thought. _________________

Drive Nacho Drive did this and installed a whole water filter-pump system below the floor.
On another note - Does anyone remember the mod someone did to add a storage drawer in the location below the slider? I have searched but can't seem to find the pictures or info on that one.

Love that idea - couldn't keep the stock fridge/kitchen though, right? (or you'd just have to raise them too)
Also, anybody else think a plexi-glass cover on here would look AWESOME?! And practical too - at a quick glance you can see what you've got in there... _________________ '91 Syncro 16 Reimo Hightop Conversion, eTDI |

Finally getting around to sealing the exterior of the box with aerosol bed liner. 2 coats of Dupli-Color and 2 coats of Rust-O-leum. Baking in the hot driveway sun as I type. Happy with the finish. Similar to the finish of a GW steel plate bumper, but not as durable as powder coat or, even close to, Line-X.

Very nicely done Syncronoid, but where are the led lights?
This is by far the best I've seen, well done.

Would a Fiberglas box like the steel one work? It wouldn't be as strong but not as heavy either. Good idea or bad idea? _________________ 1984 Vanagon Westfalia 1.9 wbx

I really want this mod. The space for tools and gear is irrisistable! It seems like an outfit like RMW could build a run of the metal boxes pretty easily. They already do the underwear storage drawers out of steel. The kit could ship with the steel powdercoated box, a lid and a template to cut the hole. LED lighting would be optional.

The box itself is 5" deep. You could probably go another inch and still have plenty of clearance and be level with the driveshaft protector. _________________ '90 Syncro Westy w/GW2.5L

The lid is the tough part; I still haven't decided the best way to install a locking lid. Still staring at it. _________________ '90 Syncro Westy w/GW2.5L |

Plexiglass! Plexiglass!
Heck, fill it with water and some goldfish for "ambiance" or just to drive your on-board cat nutty _________________ '91 Syncro 16 Reimo Hightop Conversion, eTDI |
