I have a SunPro compression tester, but never used it on a VW before.
It's difficult to get ththe rubber hose/threaded end to screw in, because of the angle, the recess,a nd not being able to line up directly because of the flexible rubber hose. There's a 14mm extender but I'm wary of that falling in if I try to screw that in first, like it won't stick in my 5/8 spark plug socket. Any hints, or have some of you made a little adapter yourself? That's what I'm thinking of right now. Thanks. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70. I've got a Lisle, which is quite similar to the Sunpro. I screw the adapter on the hose, then into the cylinders. Never had trouble doing that. It's about the same as using a length of hose to start a spark plug!
Some times the adapter stays in the hole when you remove the hose, but a plug wrench gets it right out. |

Does your kit's flexible hose have threads that also fit the spark plug hole, and that can also thread into that short 14mm spark plug thread adapter in the kit, so that really gives you two ways to thread in (theoretically)?
That's what mine has. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70. I have a snap-on compression gauge , it has different hoses for every spark plug size long or short . _________________ http://www.etsy.com/shop/AlphaKnots |

Yes it does.
The Lisle;

The Sunpro; http://www.jegs.com/i/Sunpro/885/CP7827/10002/-1?C...7AodqwYA2Q
The hose on the Lisle doesn't have the quick disconnect, not sure it's needed. I also have a full set of Snap-On's and all the adapters for it. It stays in the cabinet most of the time. Just easier to grab the Lisle. |

Does any manufacturer make a compression tester that simply has a metal adapter that you can screw into the spark plug hole--one that's long enough to stick out of the engine tin so you can snap on your rubber hose?
I have the rubber hose arrangement. And it's a joke to screw in that bendy hose into an engine that's installed. It would be nice to have a tester that has a long enough adapter to do what I mentioned above.

I wonder if using a a spark plug non-fouler (or two) would work as an extender? You'd still need to screw in the flexible rubber hose, but at least you'd be able to see what you were doing.
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/DOR3/4200...lug+fouler and also stocked at most AutoZones.
I'm not wanting to cut my flexible hose and and a quick-connect there. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. That would be the Snap-On set; http://doanfamily.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/DSC_4587-1024x671.jpg
but I really have never had trouble with the other style. |

OK, here's what I've done so far, since this is not for my own VW:
I used a small rubber stopper with a hole in it, drilled the hole larger from the big side, but only about 1/2 through. I inserted a plastic double hose-barb connector into that, and used a rubber hose (1/2 inch heater hose) on that connector up over the compression tester flexible hose's 14mm threads, and secured that with a hose clamp.
So hopefully I can just hold that rubber stopper in the cylinder head threads and get a reading, like with one of those "universal" compression testers (like in the $50 tool at O'Reillys, but not in their loaner tool, which is like the one I already have). I'll let you know if this works, out of pocket cost so far is zero, I had all that stuff. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I have a SunPro that's a few decades old. Your and mine must be very different. I use mine all the time at any angle just by bending the hose and holding it at approximately the correct angle to the plug hole while turning the other end.
A friend of mine uses 3 anti-foul extenders tacked together to get past the tins on his cars with limited clearance. His is an old Snap-On. |
