Very nice sign work. I have a friend that wants us to do some sign work on his 60 panel and we have been experimenting a bit with some brush sign work. It is a lost art and I am having second thoughts about trying it on his bus as it's not as easy as it looks. Great Job.

What a long strange trip it has been...

Yep, Precious and I are going to sell souvenirs at Peddler's Jamboree this Saturday! Had it parked on Vine and Main today, advertising...

See you Saturday? I'll be the old long haired bearded fellow surrounded by granola chicks, braiding bracelets and setting snaps and drinkin beer and groovin on the music.

bonecollector,

Holly says get sign painter's paint (red shot) it flows better than others like Rustoleum.

You can wipe off in process with mineral spirits. Make sure you chalk 3 lines for letter height (Caps and lower case). Get a hand lettering book.

Or you can bring your bus to Mid-Missouri and Holly will do it. She is fabulous and a joy to work with...

Looking good Dave. Keep it up and there won't be an "most in need of restore" award for you at BNNTA.

I use "1 shot" and have been cheating with stencils. I like the article in Hot VW's last month about sign painting buses where they used a projector to project the image onto the bus. Thanks for the tips. Does she have a hand lettering book she recommends? Again the bus looks great. Love the Ozzie logo.

Hello All,

The countdown clock has begun. "my precious" will take off 9 a.m. Friday August 30, 2013 for Buses Nowhere Near the Arch. Fluid levels checked, full of fuel ready to cruise for 100 miles to Mark Twain Lake to see all my bus friends!!

This is my first road trip in the old POS...
It has come a long way since it was drug from the fence row to my garage. I am pretty sure it will make it fine, but you never know till you try.

I will miss the luxury of our westy camping but am excited to show at BNNtA, hope to be the oldest, crustiest bus there.

Look for you there
David

Wow, super cool.
Is Holly a sign writer or is she just great at detailed paint work?
My wife is great at detailed stuff & I'm tempted to unleash her on my '62.

Andy,

Holly Hughes spent many years as a professional sign painter. I am just lucky to have her as a friend. She is a wonderful lady and an environmental artist!

http://www.holly-hughes.com/

I say have your wife try it. Chalk lines and use One Shot paints. If a mistake is made, it will clean off with mineral spirits.

I have used a stencil before to cut the time down on a commercial job. I get the letters cut, in reverse. in a special stencil material, though I have also used regular vinyl in a pinch. I paint part of the letters with the stencil, peal it off and then finish by painting the rest by hand, in order to get that hand painted look while cutting the time necessary to do it. If done right, it can look quite impressive, just like as if it was done by an old timer with a mawl stick, lettering brushes and a pint of good whiskey (to steady the hand).

Have been using/driving bus on occasion, been to Busses Nowhere Near the Arch 102 miles (one way), and a local car show 30 miles (one way). It drives great seems to like 48 mph....

Got my new bumper yesterday and have it on for test fit.

Looks great with the new bumper David! I love that old Girl!

I was sure I would be awarding the "oldest Transporter" award to you at the awards ceremony at BNNTA, but Kent brought out his beautiful freshly restored '57 Standard Sunroof and deservedly cleaned up at the awards ceremony (three awards for that gorgeous Bus)! When I ever finish my 36 hp Double-Cab, you and I will cruising along at the break-neck speed of 50 mph and we'll be happy we got up to there!

Nice logo's too! Did you once offer your services (or was I hallucinating again?) to make a new cover for the "tilt" frame on my bed cover?

Way to go on that old girl!

Ohhhh! You're gonna love new upholstery! Are you installing one of Matt Miller's kits? He makes 'em in the correct pebbled black material.

Look back in my '59 DC restoration thread for photos, around page 4 or 5 IIRC, for a shot or two of the low profile Brazilian tilt set up on my (and the McCurdy's) DCs. I have the original black vinyl tilt cover to use as a pattern, although I'm thinking it would be cool in a tan water-proof canvas of some sort. Just dreamin' I suppose...

Keep plugging away on "my precious"!

Bill

The seat cover will probably be blue leather, just using what I've got on hand in the shop, trying to save a few dollars after buying more precious metal (front bumper).
I have figured out padding and pattern with little or nothing, but patternmaking is what I do. I have made hundreds of leather coats and purses. Will probably do a trial pattern fit of muslin, cordoroy or old army blanket, again using what I have on hand...then proceed with leather.

I am very pleased with comfort of seat bottom!!

I actually used two layers of 1" compressed polyester, my proof reader is on vacation.

Here it is, another crummy photo, blue leather, not bad for no pattern.
Sure is great not to sit on springs!! Probably do a black leather dye wash to soften color...or maybe not.
