We then set the body on the chassis for a final time, and bolted it down. That was one big check mark on the to do list!

With the body permanently mounted to the chassis, we then hung the doors. Much to my surprise, they fit like a glove. We’ve been very fortunate with body & door alignments on this car. Also mounted the front driver’s fender – the only one I have at the moment!

Over this past weekend, we began installing the WW headliner. Padding is all in, and we finished the door pillars. We’re happy with how they came out, but there’s a lot more to go!

Shocked I just came across this build and I must say it has been very enjoyable to read/see! I was around 12-13 when my dad gave me my first bug. We worked on it together too. We didnt do the level of work you all have done, but it was something I will always remember! Approximately 25 years later I am building another bug and lets just say my 9 year old daughter likes to help some! Keep up the good work!

Awesome job. How often is Wade going to go outside and find both his car and his dad MIA?

Very cool build with your boys. I remember my 68 bug build with my dad at 15. I am sure your boys will look back at this build later in life with a smile on thier faces "like mine right now" spending time with their dad and a great car. Smile

Probably more than he'd like, especially while I'm "fine tuning" it. I've warned him that process could take several months Smile

Thanks for all the support and comments everyone!

Absolutely! We're driving hard to have the car ready for the Wasatch Classic on July 20, and I think we're going to make it.

We're at the point in the headliner installation that we need to put in the ragtop mechanism, so we're in the middle of putting it together now. We spayed the cover with the green dye but the color came out too similar to the car, so I had another batch of hydrate green mixed up last week and ordered a new cover from CIP1. Just waiting for it to arrive sometime this week to keep that moving along. I was hoping we could just re-spray the cover we've already dyed, but the paint shop said if the layers get too thick it would likely peel, especially on a folding ragtop. Sucks to buy it twice, but luckily it was on sale Smile

Carpet and padding were installed late last week, and we're very happy with how they turned out.

The window rubber from WW didn't turn out so great - it's crap. We tried for several hours on Friday and Saturday to get it and the trim secured to the back window and quarters and it just would not hold in place. We tried so many ways to get it to stay on - tape, several people holding it, and nothing would work. We finally gave up in pure frustration. I marched back inside and ordered a German set with molded corners, so we now have to wait for that to arrive as well. And figure out what to do with the useless WW rubber...

Our painter brought the re-painted fenders to us late Saturday night, so we got them mounted to the car. Looks like a real car again. We finished the night by mocking up a green running board to see how it will look when done.

near complete now. good work.

Here is a link to an original ragtop and i think that it looks like a much darker colour than the turkis car colour.

Hope you understand what i mean.

I can't get the link to work but I agree the ragtop color needs to be darker than the car. Hopefully my second batch of color will be closer to the original. The test spray looks dead on so hopefully it will look the same on the new cover.

Yea, Wade is already talking about opening up a restoration shop. He's really enjoyed the process, and has a natural talent for this stuff. And his younger brother is already chomping at the bit to get his ghia going. I think they're both infected now!

Got the green running boards from WW. High quality & heavy duty.

Thanks for the pic. That color looks very similar to the new batch of dye so fingers crossed it comes out looking right. The new ragtop cover arrived yesterday so we'll prep and spray it either this evening or tomorrow.

Thanks. Makes me laugh that from your perspective we're building a stock car - it's modified quite a bit from my stand point, although I love how it's turning out.

Great job on that 58 rag you're putting together. Watching it closely!
