|
|
Process of updating my brakes on my 1966 bug and had a couple questions...
From what I have read on here and viewed on the BugMe Videos... that from '65 and Older and from '69 and newer with the IRS transmissions, that you have the bearing cover that you can change the grease seal without taking the carrier off.
so did 1966 - 1968 have the carrier that you had to remove to change the seal? the one with the little hole that let the oil out through the backing plate?
Here is what I have taken off my vw. ( AUG. 1965 - VIN: 116046xxx )
Drums: not sure why they are different?
The drum on the right looks like it should have the oil slinger...
Passenger Side Rear:
Drivers Side Rear:
Parts taken off:
to me the Bearing Carrier / Cover looks like '65 and older where you don't have to take the carrier off.
Front of Bearing Cover:
Back of Bearing Cover:
the backing plate does have the hole for draining the oil though.
Will this setup work as it is? ( with new Pads, Cylinders and Seals )
Thanks! _________________ ROBERT

Were the brakes working before? I suspect they were. You won't need an oil slinger for the drum in the right hand photo.
I would skim the inside of the drums, renew your brake shoes and wheel cylinders, check the brake hardware (return springs and clips, etc) clean the backing plate, bearing housing and everything else you've pulled apart, get an axle seal/dasket kit and put it back together.
You should be right to go.
Hope this helps. _________________ The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie - deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth - persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.

Thanks for the reply.
When I picked it up the brakes didn't work, and the car did not run.
I am changing out all brake lines, cylinders, shoes. and having drums turned.
Seal / Gasket kit is on the shopping list. _________________ ROBERT

By the way, the first year for the new style bearing cap was 1965. 1964 wsa the last year that used the in-drum slingers.
The drums interchage from 1958-1967, but VW did change the design a couple of times in there. 1966 was the first year for the stiffer drums with the star pattern you can see on the outside. So someone's mixed parts up on you for drums as well.
It looks to me like both of your bearing caps are the 64/older style.
If you decide to track down some 64/older slingers - you can use them with later drums, but you'll have to drill the exit hole in them. (I supect at least one of your drums won't have the hole) |
