I'd like to hear from people with actual experience with removing a pop-top canvas then re-installing that same canvas - if there are any. This is an 86 van that has the aluminum rails, as opposed the early vans that used staples (of which I am more familiar with).

I have a nicely made pop-top canvas with an oversize front window on my van, made by a friend. However, due to time, no zipper was installed on the screen window when she sewed it. I'd like to have that zipper added, replace the now-torn screen and I was thinking adding side windows to make a 3-window canvas, as I miss that feature from my old van.

I think trying to accomplish the above while the canvas is still on the van would be problematic.

I seem to remember seeing a window kit in the classifieds that used a type of fabric glue to install, instead of sewing/taking the canvas off. Might be a cheap solution if only temporary.

I just took my canvas off to replace with a new one, and I think if you carefully mark the center point of each end and side, and keep track of where each aluminum rail came from it would be pretty easy. Mine was stapled in the corners and middles into these little wood blocks with slide into place underneath the rails. If yours has those and you can just remove the little blocks while attached, I think it would be quite easy to reinstall it, since those would hold it in place more or less while you got the rails back on.

I have an 86 I put a new canvas on.
With the top bead under the aluminum rail and the bottom plastic bead under the lower aluminum rail........ I cannot foresee any problems whatsoever with your removal and a reinstallation plan............. Providing your seamstress doesn't change any critical dimensions.
